Title: DD Gill Mold
Post by: DobynsTriton on 02/07/13 17:42 UTC
Gonna try to modify it a little with one of my drill presses. i think if i make the vents a little deeper possibly a hair wider itll fill the arms out all the way.I believe it will work out. The bodies of my mold shoot fine so i really dont want to have to swap it

You might be on to something and if it works for you that's great.  I don't have any problems getting the arms to fill, but I'm shooting them a little hotter than you might have to when doing laminates or two colored baits... I'm finding that it is a bit of a tempermental mold that may not be for everyone in every situation, but I haven't experienced any craters now that we have the proper file to run.

Agreed. single colors it works everytime after the mold gets warm. The vents I'm thinking if the more room the vent has for what i call ''injection air'' to pass thru the better it can fill at a low temp

I would suggest starting with a very minor mod first and proceed a little further until you find what might work.  Like you and I discussed earlier, the only bad thing I could see coming would be a little excess plastic making it into the vent, but hey, pull it off when it's cool at least the mold works with your process.

Agreed, nothing some manicure scissors can't fix lol.I'm going to try the 2 short small vents that are on the arm. I might not have to mess with the longer vents at all since my problem is mainly in the arm/bend of the arm

It shouldn't take much so don't get carried away.  PM me if you totally screw it up.

Will do. I'm almost positive its a vent. ive got the mold hot enough to where if you spit on it it sizzles & i still didnt get a full arm.. I will. im gonna do it as slow as possible

From what i read they've had ''moon craters'' & dents. I just cant get the arms to fill

Those arms look very similar to the 2.5" swim. To get them to fill my mold cannot be cold and plastic has to be 340-350 or they will do the same thing yours are doing. I don't know but plastic that hot may cause dents on the bigger part of the bait though.

Have you tried pouring at 360 or so to see what it does.

Put it on the griddle dobs. Let us know how it goes.  I so much want to buy this mold. But can't pull the trigger on it.

Just Luke warm on the mold makes a huge difference then cold to the touch.

No issues at all with the arms filling unless I shoot the mold to slow.

Even with the "defective" molds, I can shoot the mold slowly (real slooooow) and then push hard and hold. The arms fill perfect every time and no dent in the body if you wait to de-mold.

Going slow on my molds works and does help with the laminate looking good.

Are you sure your plastic is warm enough? We all have the same molds I believe. I am shooting around 330-340 or so I'd guess. (Never have used a thermometer in my pouring life.)

What I am getting from the picture is what looks like salt in the bait(or additive). This makes it hard for the heat to be retained long enough for the mold to fill. Adding vent where you did seems to me would release pressure from the flowing plastic to the end. If I was getting baits like that I would inject at a medium pace, then when you feel pressure give it a quick push. This should help fill the fingers. Frank
