Title: a question for Jerry about do it molds
Post by: hawgthumper on 02/18/13 20:22 UTC
Jerry,  does Do-It make a mold for making weighted straight shank hooks? I know you have a crappie hook mold, but I'mllooking for something bigger.  Similar to a weighted swimbait hook but with the hook point down. Or, can one of your existing swimbait hook molds be modified to accept a straight shank hook? Thanks in advance.

The Yamamoto Do-It mold is a zero degree eye.  Is that what you mean?

Jeff's about got it right... unfortunately there just aren't many Do-It molds designed for a straight eye hook other than the two already mentioned.  I think I know kinda what you're looking for but it might help to see a picture of something if you have one.  I've a feeling that you're looking at a modification at least if not a custom design from a Blank Mold.  The Gamakatsu V-eye hook that goes in the Yamamoto Jig would likely make a good hook to start playing with.

hawgthumper You maybe able to put one in Do=Its lure body mold. If they are laid out like the egg sinker mold you might have too sacrifice one to get what you want. mike

Thanks for the response guys. I already have the 2 molds mentioned. the lure  body mold might work, but the Yamamotoddefinitely not. The wieght is in the wrong place. The hook itself might work because of it's length. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of what I need, because just as unfortunately, it doesn't exist. ..yet. I've been working bon a bait for some years now and need a belly weighted type of hook gor it. Once I get the hooks, I then want to pour or inject a soft plastic body over it. So I actually need two molds. There's more to it than that,  but that's the basics. I know it's nothing new, but let's just say there's a "twist" to mine. :D I thought of the blank mold but have no idea how to get it cut. Is that something that Do-It still does? I thought I read somewhere that they had discontinued the service.

You're gonna need a machinist to cut a blank mold.  All Do-it Molds are poured in a foundry from a pattern.  There is little if any machining done to a Do-It Mold and never has been.  I'm pretty sure they've never offered custom Do-It designs, only Blank Molds that can be machined by your local machinist.

I think DOA has a pinch on weight that you can buy and use on any hook. if you have the old style weight with ears on it will also work. When I want too use some thing different than  Do - Its swim bait mold. I helps if you super some thread on the hook than some on the weight than when you pinch the weight on it has some thing to hold on to. mike
