Title: Silicone Cups
Post by: basskat on 02/23/13 22:42 UTC
Anyone use these and if so how well do they work? I like the idea of plastic not sticking to them and you can set them on a cool surface without worrying about it cracking. One more question, where do you get them?

Thanks

All I use. I think the brand is Norpro or something like that. You never want to fill them more than half full. If you do 1 cup batches, get the 2 cup. ALWAYS grab them with a glove on. #1 they get hot and #2 they can overflow when squeezed.

I like to use them for hand pours.  I feel they give me more control.  I bought mine at Table Le Sur or some such thing.  I paid waaaayyy too much for them, but it was the only place I could find them.

Uh oh...a quantum leap thing happening.  Wouldn't it be cool if Do-It carried some of the more popular things that we're always talking about?  Like silicone cups, digital thermometers, etc.

Im still stuck with the pyrex. I have been finding tons of the stuff cheap...like the two cup measuring cups for a buck and the 6, 8 and 12 ounce custard-type cups for .25 at thrift store and Salvation Army/GoodWill stores. I have a big box full of these pyrex utensils as spares. And I am still stuck with a spoon for hand pours but then I am not doing large baits.

If we could make them a one stop shop for all our needs that would be awesome. But that would probably be way to much inventory for them to carry all the time.  I know a lot of us would order from them but there are probably a lot more that wouldn't.  Might be hard for them to move the product.

I still do mainly hand pours and use aluminum pans. Initial heating is in Pyrex cup then keep in warm on hot plate and pans.

Maybe there's a small business opportunity for someone here t carry the small supplies we all use?

Be careful, I had bought a pair of these cups but just used them this weekend!  Went to pick them up and almost spilled the plastic, it could have been bad.  I m going to use them again to get a better feel for them before I make my mind up.  It will take a little getting used to, been doing plastic in the Pyrex cups for almost a yr and I am very comfortable with the Pyrex.  Issues I ran into have been stated above but just to put it into perspective:

Very hot but they hold the heat very well
Very flexable....to a fault I thought I was going to spill it out the top several times
No handle so it becomes a problem when pulling them out of the microwave

Hope it helps....Safety is the key using them.
