Title: cheap beer
Post by: ctom on 03/20/13 10:18 UTC
A couple years back our Minnesota legislature decided to build the University of Minnesota's football team a stadium. Us tax payers paid for it. Since it was a school stadium, no alcohol was to be served.  Ya, right. Last year before the season got under way, it was decided to allow beer sales during the games as long as the sales ended like half way thru the final quarter. The spread sheets were bared lately and get this......it seems that last season something like 900,000 glasses of beer were sold at $8.00 glass. And at a  loss of $16,000.00. Only in Minnesota.

Personally I think they should scrap the beer sales if a profit cannot be made. Either that or advertise Budweiser and sell Howenstein. For those that aren't familiar with Howenstein, its a Minnesota brew sold in New Ulm, Minnesota and in it's hayday sold for about $.95 per six pack. 12 packs of memory sold for about $1.35. Wasn't all that bad if it was kept cold enough to freeze your throat.

I don't allow beer in my boat. I tell people if they've come to fish, fish. Want to booze, stay on shore and have at it. I'm thinking that no beer is the way to go back to for this stadium...if they want football up close and personal. If they need beer, stay home and watch it on tv. Or go to a bar. Its no wonderthat ourstate is in such a financial quandry.  Anybody else's home turf managed as dumb as this?

That's some creative accounting if you can sell 900,000 beers at $8.00 a pop and loose money.  Either that or someone got a sweetheart contract.
I agree, beer and fishing don't mix.  Fish; then have a brew after you clean them.

Here in Ohio it's a DUI if you drink and drive a boat. Same as a car. I tell guys to leave there beer in the truck I can't afford those charges. But at a football game ? Those guys are in the stands just watching the game. I don't have a problem with them having a beer or two. So long as they have a DD to get them home safe if they have to many then why not. The game is played for the fans to watch and have a good time. Let them have fun. If they can't make money at $8.00 a beer then find someone that can.

They did not lose money on the beer sales someone is pocketing it. Here is how it breaks down in washington state one of the most highly taxed states on alcohol. A keg runs at 95-110 depending on company at $110 divided by 124 16 oz glasses cost is at approx .89. now take that same figure 124 pints x $8=$992 a profit 882 per keg. Someone is pocketing the money somewhere

Independant vendors bid on the sales. Some go for the clothing end. Some go for the food. Some bid on beer sales. All I know is that if they can't make a living by selling 900,000 cups of beer at 8 bucks a pop they need need to find a different line of work. In this state nothing amazes me anymore.

MN has DWI laws that pertain to all forms of travel. A person on a bicycle can be charged with dwi if he is drunk and gets stopped on a roadway.

When I was in college there was a beer named Red & White that was sold in Fla.; but not Alabama. Guys would grab several cases when they went to Fla. because it was so cheap; $1.05 per six pack.  Terrible stuff from what I understand.
