Title: Need info. on baits
Post by: wubbawurm63 on 04/01/13 20:46 UTC
Hey guys I have a question. I have a customer requesting soft plastic baits for northern pike. I'm not sure which one's from CCM would work, because I cater mainly to bass fishermen. What would you guys that fish for northern pike recommend( bait & color)?

Well I caught one on a thumper fry in a black back white belly color but I'm not sure what other ones will work. Probably the 2.5 and maybe 3.5" swim shads would work too. Hopefully someone else chimes in here because I don't intentionally target northerns

Josh

Edit: I forgot to say that I also caught 3 on frogs last year

Thanks Josh! It looks like I may be getting quite a few of these request and I have never fished for northern's myself but I am trying to figure out what I can offer them, and what has been working for others. Thanks again.

If it catches a bass, it will catch a northern. I'd lean toward any bait that floats....just my opinion here since 99% of the pike zI catch are caught on floating surface baits used for bass. Red and black....killer pike color. Hot orange and black too.

Living in Minnesota I fish for Northern Pike a lot...but my biggest fish have come on some strange baits!
My largest Pike the last couple years (38") came on a 1.75 Small Fry ...while crappie fishing!

I've also caught a lot of nice Pike on 6" Carrots

The most Pike have come on the 4.5" Swim Shad, especially rigged on a big spinner bait or chatter blade...and they really seem to like my tubes!

The bait that I would pick if it were going after big fish would be the 7" Wutz-it. For some strange reason I don't have that mold, but I have caught some nice fish on samples and baits I rec'd in swaps. It just seems like the logical Northern Pike bait!

But....I would bet the farm (and I've made a bunch of them this winter!) on the 3.75" DD Gill. It looks like a bluegill or shad and Pike love both. Nothing drives Northern Pike more crazy than an easy meal on an injured fish.

As soon as we get rid of the ice on the backwaters (we still have 1 -2 feet left!) I'll let you know how the DD Gill does.

7" Watzit. You see the wake coming for them and they smash them.

Thanks Guys! Your infinite wisdom has helped me once again. I guess I need to step outside my Bass way of thinking and learn how to fish other species. Thanks again.
