Title: Trout
Post by: jl3140 on 05/26/13 19:54 UTC
So here's the deal, I'm going up to Alaska on a family vacation and then to commercial fish in about a week and I wanna try out some plastics on the trout up there. What would you guys recommend for catching these fish?

Thanks,
Josh

Depending on how you're fishing, I'd probably try the 3" trout worm.  The other extreme might be an ultra minnow hair jig with a trailer of choice.  Nirvana would include a 7-8 wt. fly rod and a box full of big streamers.  Have fun, Josh, and take some pics.

I think I'd toss an email in the direction of a guide service or bait shop up there quick.

How do you rig the trout worms? I have bunch of them from swaps and stuff.

I did that and they recommended several fly patterns so I tied some and I also will buy some up there but they didn't say anything about plastics so I came here.

Josh...I want you to know up front that I'm stealing this advice from Andy,  but I'd probably fish it on a drop shot rig.

I'd also try using a tiny split shot about 18" above the hook and letting it drift in the water column.  Another thought is letting it sit on the bottom and fishing it like a shakey head.

Have a blast.
