I already make football jigs, so I have lead, pot, and skirts. I suppose hooks and wires and a few other things are needed. Is it cost effective? As far as quality is concerned, I know you can buy $1.00 spinner baits anywhere, or you can buy more expensive. How would you rate yours in terms of quality?

I think the key with me is I can build a 2 dollar spinnerbait that performs like a 10 dollars one. Mine are primitive by any standards but they catch fish and if they aren't perfect it my fault not the guy who I gave 10 dollars to :D

Doing it yourself will produce a superior bait compared to mass produced baits hands down, finish, quality hooks, quality skirts and attention to detail you can't go wrong doing it yourself.

Ditto re the other guys. When you catch a fish on something you made you feel better about yourself.
I was at the pond the other evening throwin' a Big Foot on one rod and a bobber with a couple sun fish hand pours on the other. A boy about 13 - 14 years old came up on his bicycle and started telling me where to fish, what to use and what I was doing wrong. About that time I had a big blow-up on the frog and the kid went nuts. I got BF back in and was checking the hook when the kid (Antonio, but I wanted to call him Opie) saw the legs. The next thing I knew he was holding that lure in his hands and holding it up in the fading light. He asked me where I got it and when I told him I made it I could almost feel myself being elevated onto a pedestal. He asked how much I charged for them. This kid didn't know what he was in for. I'm a lawyer and have spent many years at the negotiating table. We dickered for about 30 minutes. With darkness setting in we were done.
He walked away with about 15 - 20 baits that he'd never seen before. I walked away with less baits than I started with, no money, but with a big smile on my face. I also felt really good about myself.

Thanks guys. If I do this, or when I do this, I'll need a place to stay. ;) Seeing how I'm pouring plastics, jigs, and still buying molds for both!

I carried a bunch of bait making stuff to a boy scout meeting one night. Didn't fire the lead pot up but showed the molds and how to assemble buzz baits and spinner baits. Poured a few worms as well. The kids went nuts, ending up costing me about fifty bucks after I gave everything away but worth every penny. Several of these guys (young men now) are some of my best customers!

Ladies and gents that's what its about!!! If everyone gave of their selves to make some one else's day better we wouldn't be in the mess we are in now

When I first started I saved all the baits I made that I wouldnt use due to color or whatever. I gave them to the local boyscout club. Must have been about 8 lbs of plastic.
