Title: Spinners
Post by: ctom on 07/25/13 15:35 UTC
Anyone else make spinners? Not spinnerbaits, but spinners like a Mepps spinner. I use a lot of them on Lake Superior.

Through the summer months the spinners I use are all pretty much heavy weights, 1/2 to 5/8 ounce with #5 blades and #2 treble hooks. Gold plate is generally my go-to color as long as some orange is on the body or behind the body in beads. Gold has to have orange, but it is my best color. A little later on, late-September thru October, silver with blue or silver with green are great colors when the salmon move in-shore and these color paterns work a bit better in a size 3 spinner sporting a 1/4 ounce body. A silver blade with purple and blue split length-wise on the front side is a dynamite dark day color too.

I've been in the garage making spinners most of the day. I had to quit....finger tips are bleeding and sore from twisting wire. I'll finish my annual stocking mission tomorrow.

Yep, primarily make #4 blade and size 4 hook.  Brown/white tail red/white blade is our go to color.  Black and orange is also good.  Made a blue w/ red .04 glitter this winter that could work well on clear water, but haven't been on a clear lake yet this year.  I might include one in each bag for the next swap, it's a great smallie lure.

CTOM I have bogg's Pro wire binder on my tying bench. I got it at Rollie & Hellen's for  60 bucks it is well worth it. I can bind up to .051 wire with mine. If you send the parts I will make them in trade for some of them frog you make if that's ok with you. Any time someone want's something like this done I'm more than willing to do it. PM me If you want. Question what do you use for the weight being it's 1/2 or 5/8 and are the hooks tied or plan. Thanks mike  8)

The Hagen's wire bender is a nice unit.  It has a Musky wire head set for heavy wire.

I have the Hagen bender and it is a nice
Unit. I make both the Mepp's style and roostertail style spinners. Also the musky bucktails. Just another part of the bait making addiction :D
