Title: Rippin' the Snootie
Post by: andrewlamberson on 08/19/13 09:24 UTC
Finally got into some nice smallmouth on Friday evening, ripping a white Snootie over the wing dams for a reaction bite.

I pull up to the downstream side of the wing dams and cast over the wing dam and ripped the Snootie back as fast as I can with the rod tip held high. Lots of missed strikes...but lots caught too!

I like the Snootie the best for this because it has excellent hooking (always seems to be in the top center of the mouth) and if I hang it on the rocks a quick shake with the rod tip held high causes it to rock back and forth and come off the rocks.

Two 18'ers came to the Snootie with a white skirt....and a dozen or so smaller fish hit the Snootie without the skirt...but with a swim chub grub attached.

See the previous posts for how CTom has modified his mold to add the keeper wire...and how I cut the collar off and tie a wire bait keeper on....or leave the collar on and tie the wire keeper on behind the keeper if I want a skirt and plastic.

Great job Andy!  I don't have the snootie, but just got the casting jig.  I am going to have to buy some white skirts now.  THANKS!!!!   ;D

The casting jig works pretty well doing the same thing...it just doesn't come off the rocks as well if you get hung. I like the white skirt because it looks like shad...and if the white disappears... I set the hook! It's amazing how they can hit something like that and you don't feel anything right away.

Guys, Andy is being modest in his "snagged jig" removal process. On the wing dams where the water is like five feet deep or so he just reaches down and unhooks his jig.

I knew Andy was tall, but didn't know he had rubber arms too.
