We had a pretty cool post asking where everyone is from not long ago. How about what do you do for a living? I know what a lot of people do just from talking to you, but others may find it really interesting how diverse our backgrounds are. I could spill some of the beans but I'm going to leave it to you. Some people have jobs that would (or have) landed them on Discovery channel.
The coolest thing is that our passion for being outdoors, fishing and making baits brings us together.
So, what do you do for a living?

My career has always been in technology. In the Navy I fixed computers and air traffic control equipment on a Destroyer, and for a short stint in the middle east. From a corporate perspective I've worked for GE, PWC, ePunctuate! and SAP. I started on the hardware side (telephony, networks and servers) and ended on the software side (ERP / CRM). Somewhere in the middle I spent some time doing business process re-engineering.
Caney Creek is now home. Our entire family is involved in some capacity. My only chance of making it on the Discovery channel is if they wanted to make a G rated outdoors version of OCC. ;D
Tight lines!

I am lucky enough to be involved in the fishing community.
I own a Fly Tying Factory as well as a Fly Tying Material distribution company called Hooked on Flies which I started in 1996.
I just started making Soft Plastic Baits. My first customer order $3000.00 worth of plastics.
The only reason I can do this job is because the wife is a partner in a Chartered accounting firm and earns about $17000.00 per month of which we get out about $9000.00. The rest goes to taxes which is quite high in South Africa. 40% Tax + 14% VAT
The most I fished in one year was 225 days
I am one lucky bastard. Sorry she does not have any sisters ;D ;D ;D

I am a career firefighter. I work in the city of Middletown,ct which is about 10 miles south of Hartford. It's a pretty rough area but than it has it's nice spots outside of downtown. The only way anybody has probably heard of it is because last year we had a giant power plant explosion in which numerous people were killed. Actually, it turned out to be the largest natural gas explosion in the U.S. Anyway, I can talk for days on all the interesting/unique/unfortunate calls we go on everyday, and if there are any other firefighters here I'm sure it's the same for them. Its the best job in the world!
What's nice is the hours we work in our department. 24hrs on and 72hrs off. It's usually a long and tough shift, but the days off are worth it. Time off can be spent working other jobs, making baits, or fishing. I usually choose the latter two. Anyway, I love what I do and am very fortunate to be doing it!

I am a Tunnel Inspector. I travel all over the US from one job to the next. Currently I am working on the East Side Access project in NYC. The total dollar amount for the 13 projects is a little over 7 billion. I lead a team of inspectors that work on two different project valued at just over 800 million.
One project has 4 - 22.5' tunnel going under the busiest railroad interlock in the united states. Roughly 800 trains use this interlock in any given day.
The other project in the most expensive tunnel per liner foot in the world at this time. The tunnel is 123' long and 90 million dollars. This tunnel goes under 4 existing subway lines, 5 lanes of roadway and two elevated trains.

I am the Chief Information Officer at a hospital. My big project for this year just brought in 2 checks totalling 1.2 million. I didn't even get a soda!! Least my bait customers say thanks!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

I work in an Autobody repair shop and have for 30 yrs. And like Dave I solve crash problems just in a differant way. I love to make things and dont get to go fishing much, have to spend alot of time at home. Life is good, Frank

Being from the technology field I can relate. Not being hounded is all the thanks you will ever get...
With all the specialties it just amazes me the amount of knowledge we collectively have. With just those who have posted, we could build a really hi-tech (safe) vehicle that could possibly fly or dig tunnels, and when we wreck it Frank can fix it, because it won't be burnt up in the crash.
Sorry, It's Friday :D

I am a police sergeant in Huntington Beach California which is located in Orange County. It is just south of Los Angeles.
I got in to bass fishing as a stress reduction and then got into plastic pouring to help with the stress of NOT catching fish ;D.

I am the Marketing Operations and Intellectual Property Manager for a high tech engineered plastics company in Winona, MN. Since I live very close to the Mississippi River...I have managed to fish over 150 days/year over the last 3 years (being an empty nester helps!!!).
In one of my former life(s) I was the Marketing Manager for 3M Scientific Anglers (the fly fishing company) and I've been a fly fishing guide for over 30 years. I've guided in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Wyoming and Alaska. I've retired from guiding!
I have also tied flies for over 40 years.. bass, bluegill and trout flies.
When my wife and I moved to Winona I got hooked on fishing the Mississippi river...and reverted back to spin and bait casting...and then into molding my own. If anyone is ever in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area...let me know and we will go fishing. You will not believe how good the Mississippi river is in this area!

I did some National Guard training at Camp Ripley back in the 90s for 2 weeks during July/August. I loved it, 70 degree weather during the day, 50s at night. Had deer standing at the end of the runway when I got off the plane. Everyone was carrying hockey sticks???? ??? LOL

I am a Correctional Officer for the Colorado Department of Correction and yes I have been on The National Geographic Channel. LOL. I was a Tactical Commander for one of the Emergency Response Teams during the interview about offender behaviors. My primary focuses were on riots and disturbances within the correctional setting. Enough about work! I live in Wetmore Colorado, but was born in Salinas California where the fishing is as popular as Texas to North Carolina. My father fished the Western B.A.S.S., B.A.S.S. and the US B.A.S.S. circuits during my childhood and did extremely well. In fact, in 1985 he finished 45th in the world tournament at lake Mead. So, my passion about bass fishing comes from a long line of fisherman. In the 90's I began fishing tournaments and did very well until I lost my weekends, which really sucks! When I was a kid my father hand poured his own worms and made his own jigs at his shop, so every day after school, you guessed it, I was pouring worms and making jigs. After looking into today's technology and things like what Jason has created, it has motivated me to start my own business in the custom tackle industry. It's a slow process, but eventually I will get there.
I've noticed that everyone here is about collaborating to succeed in the tackle industry by sharing idea's, color patterns, etc. Which has really been an attractant of mine. Nobody wishes anyone failure and continues to offer advice when someone ask for it. That by far beats any other social site on the internet. Here I feel at home and hope to remain an active participant for the remainder of my time.
-
Dave, at first I thought you were an old friend of mine when you started out about being a CO. I think he was in Colorado for a while. Anyway, welcome to the site!
-
LOL, it is a small world brotha!

I'm an estate planning attorney in Roseville, CA. I might be the only attorney who's web site has a "The Lawyer's Fishing Page". In two days I'll be celebrating my 32nd year in practice. The only thing between me and retirement is money. I take Fridays off and if it's a holiday anywhere in the world I'll try to take that day off too.

...the only attorney who's web site has a "The Lawyer's Fishing Page"
Love it.
I'm Tom. I am a life-long resident of Rochester, Minnesota. Most of my life has been spent as a carpenter, but after 30 years the body said enough of this. Arthritis has taken a toll on some of my carcass but not the hands or legs yet. I'm semi-retired but don't think I'll ever really quit working. Crappies are the name of my game. I also enjoy a week in the woods each fall looking for a deer.
As a youth in the 7th grade I got my hands on a Herters catalog that was worn thin and discarded. A neighbor gave it to me. I had a paper route, so I took some of my money and got a new catalog. That led to me buying a fly tying kit. Along about the eighth grade a phy-ed teacher showed me some flies that he was looking for. I took one home on a Friday and on Monday handed him a pile of about thirty different colors all based on the same pattern in a size 16....just like he wanted. Thus my involvement with the fishing world got a toe-hold.
I have my own website, Crappietomtackle.com, where I sell some crappie jigs and a couple bucktail walleye jigs that are unique. My focus has been on head color. My selling point is the head colors that I have created. The crappietom logo came from an internet nickname given to me by a friend. I trademarked the name to use on my tackle site. I stopped tying flies in the 9th grade when I started to make jigs using an oak mold to put out 1/16 [or thereabouts] jigs. I still have that mold. I quit using minnows about 20 years ago when I found out that plastic has different rules and generally makes things more productive while in the boat. Or from shore, or on a dock.
Crappies have been "my" fish for thirty years now, however I do chase walleye and sauger during the fall, winter and spring. My boat is water ready all year, inspite of living where winter really is winter. I don't ice fish unless I can walk out somewhere [or drive] and fish on open ice. Pools 4,5 and 5A of the Mississippi River are my usual haunts and a nuclear reactor found on lower pool 3 of the river helps to keep the river free of ice on pool 4 so if I want walleyes and sauger I just pull the boat up and enjoy the open air. Things can be pretty comfortable on the water down to about 20 degrees. Basically I prefer open water and I have areas where certain lakes' ice will open up early and I'll be found standing on the ice next to the open water with a long rod in hand, fishing crappies with plastics.
Currently I am on Culprit Tackle's Pro Staff [10 years now], and have working relationships at a staff level with both JBLures and Today's Tackle....both Minnesota based tackle companies....and serve as Pro Staff at Thorne Bros Tackle in Blaine, Minnesota. I have had involvement with Lindy tackle before that last change of ownership and have been on staff with Mepps/MisterTwister.
In the last couple years I took a serious interest in steering myself away from the plastic tackle found at package stores and that tackle which has become so standardized by the name-brand companies. The internet has helped out in this quest. I have been in heaven at Microspoons, where Keith has done a great job of doing what I needed. Now I just need to do this for myself. I have a local market in the north here and will have what I decide to make for sale on my website on a custom order basis. As I create color schemes and patterns I will show them and let people decide for themselves what they'd like. I have no intention of doing this full-time because I enjoy being with the wife traveling and shopping just as much as I enjoy fishing and working in this field. I should mention that Carole [wife]and I have an antique shop in Red Wing, Minnesota and that also keeps us entertained.
This is a nice site and I think I'll enjoy it here. I will just thank everyone who offered help a big thank you again.

Great Forum Guys,
I sell Industrial Electrical equipment. I have been doing this for 20 years. I love to fish and hunt, when I get time. I coach a lot of baseball. I coached the 10yr old Daphne, Alabama Dixie Youth Minor League All-Star Baseball team this year. They were a great group of kids. We won Sub-District,District, Alabama State Championship, and went to the Dixie Youth World Series in Carthage,North Carolina. We went 2-2 there. It was a wild ride. I used 11 days of vacation coaching these kids.

Jason started this thread back in June of last year. I found it useful, informative and fun. It's nice to know who you're communicating with. There seem to be a number of new guys (gals?) on the forum who probably don't know about this thread. Soooo, what do you do for a living?

I enjoyed reading through these. After reading so many posts by everyone, as well as getting so much advice from everyone, I feel like I already know a lot of you. For someone that just started out pouring their baits this forum has been extremely helpful.
I am 27 years old and have been teaching 7th grade math for the past 5 years. My wife, Jennifer, and I are truly blessed to have just had our first son, Easton.
I am also the coordinator of a Hunting and Fishing club for our middle school students at school. This gives a lot of students opportunities that they may not get at home to learn about and appreciate the outdoors.
I have a true passion for the outdoors. In the spring and summer I love to fish and in the winter I'm in my deer stand. The outdoors has been a major part of my life. I have pictures of my dad changing my diaper in his Norris Craft boat when I could barely even walk and taking me squirrel hunting when I couldn't even hold a gun.
Dad worked 3rd shift and would still find time, even after working all night, to give me opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors and to spend quality time with him. I am truly blessed to have him and I hope to be that same role model for my son.

Otis,
I come from a family of electricians, but only know enough personally to be dangerous. My Dad and one of his buddies came down and wired our shop. He has done a lot of work in nuclear facilities and basically wired it to the same standard. I am super proud of the job they did, it is a constant reminder to me of him. The conduit looks more like art than an industrial application. Super cool gift.

Lol turkey hunting would be so much easier if you could just call them by name :o I started with the call making about 3 years ago. After almost loosing a finger to the table saw this weekend I almost decided to quit. Only problem is I have a few local stores that depend on me to supply them with a hand crafted product... I have however decided that bait making is a lot safer ;D

Dennis, can you make a crow call? I have one but after you use it a few times the sound changes. Those birds are always in my garden, but when I try to sneek out to get'em, they fly off.

hi all from Australia
I live in a beautiful part of NSW called Jervis bay it is a fantastic bay teaming with marine life we also have the shoalhaven/crookhaven river systems 25k north, fresh water fishing 50k west, salt water river and ocean pelagics on my door step it is only 5 minutes to the boat ramp into the bay
i have been a fish monger for 10years or so, after that became to much of a drain on my family life (80-90hrs p/w) i moved to one of my other passions hunting. I started wild harvest of kangeroos. Yes we kill and eat the animals off our coat of arms. This is all done under spotlight at night and all safe food handling rules apply even though you are out in the paddock. The market co-lapsed thanks to some overseas intrests putting pet food grade (as apposed to human consumption quality) into there prison system and subsequently nearly killed 1/2 of there inmates so no more roo meat to Russia it counted for about 40% of all exports gone. in my last financial year i shot (head shots only out to 350m) field dressed and weighed is over 10000 roos which is about 2+ tonne a night (20-70kg dressed) @80c kilogram.
i now have an oyster farm, a small bait company and sell soft plastic lures in my spare time. The lures are proving to be most lucrative and great fun and more and more effort and time is going into it all the time.
I don't know how this fits into your national geographic scale but it has been a great adventure for me so far and wouldn't change it for the world.
thanks for taking the time to read my story

My Full-time job is a Meat Manager for a grocery chain here in the Midwest. I learned the trade right out of high school. I have been Managing for the last 10+ years, prior to that I had been a meat-cutter. I am just glad I still have all my fingers intact...had some dandy cuts and stitches early on in the career. You need to have a ton of respect working with band saws, knives, etc... on a daily basis or trouble is waiting around the corner, that said, I don't want any accident to mess with my passion for bass fishing or I 'll be in a world of hurt - no pun intended
-
I am an Account Rep for NOV ( National Oilwell Varco). Supply and distribute for drilling rigs and production companies. Work in the Marcellus and Utica shale, PA and WV.

My full time job right now is a Flooring Salesman at Home Depot. However my love is music and right now I'm out on the road playing bass guitar with two guys, Jimmy Needham & Trip Lee (Christian artists), on what's called the Grace Amazing Tour. In the past I've played with Ryan Cabrera & also on a few lower budget records. But deffinately one of my favorite acts to play with is my dad (Dallas Holm). I've been playing on tours with him whenever I can since I was in high school.

I've been a union carpenter for 18 years but the last 3 have been tough. I build custom rods & that's the only thing keeping me alive! Built 85 last year. Started my own sub-contracting co this past summer & keeping busy for now & hopefully working for myself will allow me to fish more. Been coaching girls softball the last 6 summers & helping with marching band the last 5. Funny when they find you can build something you become very popular! Bought my molds last fall but just now able to pour. Really enjoying making my own baits & hope to use them to my advantage! Been fishing bass & walleye tournaments for 10 years or so & going to start fishing crappie tournaments this year.

I am a lieutenant of patrol in a small town police department. I have been bass fishing for 23 years and 22 of that was bass tournaments. I started making my own baits two years ago and other anglers liked them and wanted to buy them and now I have started a business making baits for fisherman.

I am a grounds keeper at Sun Life Stadium. I get to take care of the field for the Miami Dolphins, Miami Hurricanes, and until last season, the Florida Marlins. If you ever went to a Marlins baseball game I was the guy who was out there fixing up the mound right before the games started. Having grown up a Miami sports fan I couldnt ask for a better job.
-
I'm in Telco also but on the field side, line,repair/install,pots,adsl,T1, FTTN,FTTP for the last 12 years, before that I worked for the gas company. I have coached youth baseball and football for the last 9 years, I also founded a charity called the Andrea Lynn Cancer Fund (www.andrealynn.org) and our biggest event is one of Illinois largest ice fishing derbies (www.icebenefit.com).
My job just recently force me to work noon to 9pm which will take away the coaching I enjoy but will open time to try pouring some baits.

I work with my family. We own and operate 2 scarp metal facilities and a auto salvage yard. I love my work and dealing with the public makes it all that much better. We live in Ft Smith AR and work in Van Buren AR.

This has always been one of my favorite threads. It was started by Jason in June 2011 and there for a while it took on a life of it's own. It occupies six forum pages, yet no one has posted on it since last year. Since then, we have a bunch of new members. If you have the time, go to Jason's first post and skim through the responses. I think you'll be entertained.
So, for all of you newer guys (and Buffy), what do you do?

17 years as an arborist surgery ended that currently 7 years as a building inspector for the local PHA in Philly.

Sounds like you and Steve (Bass Detective) might have some stuff in common.

I own a company that sells and installs alarm systems, cameras and access control. I'm the lucky one. I worked for 12 years growing up with my dad in his hardware store. Then at 25 started my own company. Now at age 55 I love what I do and I don't even know what it's like to have a boss. I've never really had one.
-
Well I am a bit of a handy man type. I work for a golf course in the restaurant during the summer, and a ski resort in the restaurant during the winter. I also maintain a small apartment complex and do lawn care in the summer. My favorite job has to be pouring baits for the 6 retail outlets that I work with and all the product testing I do on the water.

As most of you know I used to work in a prison for the State until it was closed. The past 13 weeks I have been attending a police academy and most likely will be graduating this Friday. I will then start a career with probation and parole. The academy hasn't been nice to me considering I'm 41 and partially disabled, but I hung in there. You think I would be smarter and give up working for the State and law enforcement considering all the risks, but I think some of us are just programmed for it so we do it.

I grew up on a family farm in southwest Kansas. From six until eighteen, on a tractor. From there for a construction company were I was Foreman until twenty one. Moved to Manhattan, Kansas and started my own construction company. Mostly trim and finish work focused on million plus houses. Git married in 07, and had a child on the way by 08. Economy started dropping and work got a little scarce. Having a child in uncertain financial times brought me and mine back to the farm. My dad and I farm together, and my cousin and I just started a separate farm together. Do construction on the side still, asst coach high school wrestling, build custom rods and pour more plastics than I know what to do with. We have three children now, and life is good. Except that I'm turning thirty in a couple days, afraid I'm gonna have to grow up! Joey

Air force for the last 13 years. I'm air crew life support so I inspect/repair every thing from helmets to parachutes and get to teach survival skills as well. Awesome job that has taken me many places. Afghanistan sucks lol I've worked with the B-2s and currently with the A-10s they are an amazing aircraft .
I started making hair jigs during hurricane Katrina and it has evolved into a passion for lure making and design. I focus mainly on crappie baits but I like anything that swims

17 year career as a Dental Hygienist. My passion is fishing and shooting baits. My favorite fishing buddies: Husband, Jerry & Pet/Doggie, Camoflauge {Best known as Camo}.
Been married for 6 + years to my 'soulmate', Eharmony match. He's from Montana, me from Alabama! The LOVE of my LIFE!!

Thanks for your service, Mo. You also make some mean looking crappie baits.

Hey, Buffy, keep that love flowin', girl. Sounds like Jerry hit the jackpot too. I'll bet you're a lot like my dental hygienist. She says my teeth are fine, but my gums have to come out.
Keep those posts coming in.

Denny you have the most awesome witty humor. I love reading your post. BTW, from your pic on the forum, great smile/teeth!

Great topic! I love reading what everyone does for a living. I started working at an Ace Hardware when I was 17. I started off part time and after graduating high school I went full time. The pay was not cutting it as I was 19 and living on my own. I got a job at The Home Depot that was opening soon. It as really cool and a TON of work setting up that store prior to opening. I worked there for about a year and then decided retail was not for me. I then went to work for an aluminum extruder. I was a waste water operator for their anodizing line. That was a rewarding and dangerous job as I was working with with acids and caustics. Working there has helped me learn a lot about safety which I practice now when working with plastics. I went on to become the lab tech, then the anodizing line foreman and then the traffic manager. I wish I was making plastics back then as we were also a machine shop and had 12 CNC machines and could very easily have molds made for really cheap. Oh well! I was let go from that company and I now currently work for a huge logistics company in Bolingbrook, IL. I met my friend and fellowmforum member Wilks19 there. We are both dispatchers/freight brokers. My job is to find trucks to haul freight out of our distribution center located in Decatur, GA. I have been working here for 6 years. That's my story.
-
Hey Chuck...I thought there for a minute that you and Wilks needed a distribution center for those dynamite looking baits you guys pour.
-
I make and sell Crappie an Bass baits. From hand-tied jigs, jigheads, and plastic baits now. We have shipped to almost every state in the US. Alaska is the only state we havent shipped to. We ship intenational also. Germany and Australia being our 2 places we ship outa the US to. CrappieZilla is making a great name for its self!! And before this I was US ARMY RANGER 1995-2005 1st Ranger Battalion Ft Stewart/ Hunter Army Airfield

LOL! Thanks Denny! We are getting there! LOL!

I work for a Linen and uniform supply co. in New Mexico. I guess you could say I wear many hats. I manage shipping and receiving, production, safety, and assist with maintenance for Thirty years. I have been a tournament angler for over 15 years. I started making baits about 4 years ago, and when friends and other anglers became very interested in my baits I figured I would try making a business out of it. Now I sponsor a couple of youth fishing clubs, and my local university bass team(NMSU). I want to thank Jason and all of you for helping me become better at making baits, and sharing priceless information that has helped me to share what I Love (The sport of Fishing ) with others. Thank You, and God Bless. Bob/ JBC Lure co.

Have two jobs, my bread and butter is Cooper Tire. Been there 28 years, started on the production line and now am the day shift supervisor with 130 people working for me. My second job is firefighter. Started with them 30 years ago as a firefighter and now am chief. God has been good to me and blessed me through the years. I plan on retiring in two years.
I've been making baits for over 15 years. Started out with just lead weights, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Then I made the mistake of trading a few spinnerbaits for some old worm molds, a quart of plastic and three bottles of coloring.
-
Isn't it amazing, BK, how fast we can accumulate stuff. I think I could go two lifetimes and not use up all the dead animal parts, dubbing, flashy stuff, lead, plastic, colorants, hooks, beads, tied flies, feathers, books, videos, fur, craft fur, hair, buck tail, HDA, salt, scent, eyes and all that other stuff so that we can make what we could probably buy for a couple bucks. It truly is an illness.
Oh yeah, I forgot molds.
-
If that's not the truth Denny. I'm using an old fly tying kit that was my grandfathers and then my dads and now mine. There is a wealth full of equipment in it now. Funny how it just grows and grows. But that's ok I feel each lure I make has a little bit of each of them in it. And in my book, that's as good as it gets.
-
I have way too many. Last time I counted there was 12 Do-it lead molds, a bunch of old Palmer molds and even a few Hilts molds. Have a ton of old hand pour molds and now the injection list is growing.
I consider it money well spent since there's nothing fit to watch on TV. Plus it keeps me out of my wife's hair.
-
I was in the Marine Corp for 13 years, did several things. My main job was A/C work. I now work back for the gov. I work on a Navy base doing counter IED work. Its a cool job where we get to blow stuff up. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Denny,
I do appreciate your bringing this thread back to the top. It's been a pleasure to reminisce with the older posts and gather some cool info about those who've come since. We have a very diverse and interesting group of people here no doubt, and knowing that the love of fishing, fishing tackle and specifically making tackle has brought us all here together. In a way it's pretty humbling. I'm happy to be a part of it and I hope you all are too.
Now... as you were and carry on, let us know "what you do".

Hello all. Denny was right about going back and reading what everyone does. It is really cool and love the Aussie, Good day Mate...hope that didn't offend you. In middle school I started working summers as a laborer for my uncles drywall business and into high school. My junior year I started hanging and senior year started taping. I did that through part of college and it just got too hard working construction and going to school. I went through some hard times after hs/college. I went to work full time and started working at Menards Distribution Center (like a Home Depot, but smaller). I worked my way up from a loader of flatbeds to transportation lead. I left there for a dispatcher job at a local flatbed company and loved it. It was a great time moving tower cranes, structural steel, and misc oversized/overweight loads. When the economy fell, they laid me off. I went to work for a tanker company and from there I went to a Logistics comany in Bolingbrook, IL with Crabbybass. I have been here for just over 2 years. Thanks for reading.

Hi Y'all,
My name is jack, I live in Deltona, Fl. New to the site, my first post. Me, I'm a Scale tech. been one for 23 years. Yes, the kind you weigh stuff on. Yes you can make a living doing scales and no, not like your bathroom scale. Sorry, that's the stuff people always ask. :D I live about 5 min. from a fresh water lake. 20min. from a fresh water river. 30 min. from a saltwater river and 40 min. from the Beach. Started doing soft plastic about 3 months ago, Hooked all ready.
-
Hey Jack,
Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you're going to fit right in. Don't be put off by those Northern guys who get nervous whenever they see a snowflake. Florida is probably a lot like California...oh, wait a minute...you get hurricanes. I almost thought we had a lot in common. Welcome anyhow.
Any time you have a question or need some help, don't hesitate to ask. Great bunch of guys (and Buffy).
-
Welcome to forum...heck...Florida is just like Minnesota....one month out of the year!
It is interesting to see what everyone does...no common denominator ...except the desire to make soft plastic baits. I now have enough to last a couple lifetimes! But I keep making more...and ordering more molds..... :o
-
Welcome aboard Jack. You'll enjoy it here. Andrew and Denny are the brains, I'm what they call fluff, but I like it here myself so join the fun.
-
Welcome Jack . Well what do I do ? guess it's more appropriate to ask what I don't do . Which is crank baits . Tried but I just can't get into them . My occupation is one of service to Veterans that can't feed themselves shower or shave . The things I take for granted every day . It is the most rewarding emotionally than even my tackle . The best way to know you have touched the heart of one of these guys is if he remembers your name . The purple heart is awarded to you when he gives you a nick name .
-
God bless you, Toad. I can't tell you how much I appreciate what you do.
-
Amen, Denny. Thank God for folks like Toad. I find it very dis-heartening to find how many of our veterans are "lost souls". Our society has lost a lot of it's collective gratitude for our veterans for their service and sacrifice.
-
God bless you Toad. Thanks for your dedication and hard work, it's an honor to share this board with you.
-
Guy's thanks for the cudo's . If you ever get the chance to do what I do even as a volunteer please take your shot at it . If you think you have lost a lot in your life then spend some time with these guys . You will walk away knowing how blessed you really are .

I live in Claremont ca and work in Sales for a Pharmaceutical wholesaler. I would prefere working in the fishing industry in sales and marketing. I have only been hand injecting baits for about 5-6 months I have several anglers asking for baits I'm only making cc finesse worms right now but will be ordering more molds very soon. I have a web site, blog & faceBook called Bass in the Hood I'm not selling baits on line yet but I might if I continue to get good results.
-
Welcome to the forum, Hood. It's good having you here. How about posting some pics of those finesse worms you've been pouring. They will probably make some of these guys (and Buffy) envious.
-
Hey Guys (and Buffy),
It's been about three months or so since we restarted this thread and we've added over 50 guys to the forum. Take a look at the thread from the beginning. It's insightful and interesting and fun. Even over the years many are still posting regularly.
So, join in and let us know "What do you do?"

I'm a 911 dispatcher and have been at it for 9 yrs now, 3 years ago my mom, dad, and wife opened a pizza and burger restaurant. Its doing fantastic, now I get to go to work to rest. The restaurant bizz is time consuming, stressful, and a lot of work.
I've made cranks out of basswood from ground up and caught fish on them, time move onto soft plastics since its 90% of what we fish.

I'm a senior in highschool. In the summers I'm a lifeguard and sometimes work with my dad installing hardwood floors. Nothing too exciting lol. Lacrosse is my sport of choice and have been varsity all 4 years of high school and have won two state championships. I am a Maintenance technician at an oil processing facility in the nations second largest oilfield. I work in a remote camp on Alaska's north slope.
I fly to work and spend 2 weeks there working 13 hours a day. Then I fly home and have 2 weeks completely off.
So basically I work 6 months a year 2 weeks at a time.
Free food(it's real good) and housing while I am at work. The overtime pay and work schedule make this job worthwile.
I fish Alaska's Cook Inlet a lot which is home to the worlds second largest tides.
Because of our big tides and big fish we often require bigger jigs. So I started making Alaskan sized jigs for Alaskan fish.
I make jigs from 1/48 oz - 48oz.
People liked my stuff so much I am starting a small business selling my saltwater jigs.
I have over 100 lead molds from all over the place. My current favorites are CNC custom aluminum molds made by a couple of different people.
Do-It just doesn't make enough big saltwater molds for my liking so I have been buying the CNC molds instead.

I thank the Lord upstairs every day I wake up to see the sunshine, and not the grass roots. Get to do some crappie fishing when I can too, that's the best part.....

I am a correctional officer (prison guard) I worked as union president at Kingston Penitentiary which up until sept 30th of 2013 was the oldest working maximum security prison in North America built and opened in 1835.
-
Hey KP...Did you ever run into CTOM at Kingston? He probably spent some of his spare time there in the "early days". Just a guess on my part.
-
LOL not to my knowledge denny :o my prison housed the foul scum from the very bottom of the septic tank, phedophiles, rapest, child and wife murders we even had one that killed, raped and ate his own grandmother so I hope CTOM wasn't there!
-
Naw...none of those things are up Tom's alley. I'm thinking more along the lines of him being the cook for the Donner Party.

Denny I'm glad you bring this topic up every now and then.
Yeah, me too, Justin. It's fun.

I am a golf course superintendent in north Georgia.

I don't think I've answered this post yet. In the summers, I commercial fish in Alaska, but the rest of the year I am just a poor college student haha.
This post is pretty interesting with getting to know all the different members a little more.

I am a golf course superintendent in north Georgia.
Any big bass in your water hazards?
-
I saw a guy get a hole in one once...on the fly. We were standing close to the green letting a guy play through. He hit a high, lofty shot and the ball came down less than an inch from the cup. The ball took a little of the turf, went into the hole and stayed there.
-
I have an irrigation pond that has a few big large mouth in it. They don't seem to bite artificial lures though. You can catch a small bream with a fly and then hook it in the back, cast it out under a float and catch a large mouth in the 4-6lb range.

OK, it's been six months since we've used this thread during which we've added well over a hundred new members. Even for us that have been around for a while, it's still fun to go back and read all nine pages. I'd suggest you newer guys do the same. You won't be disappointed. So...what do you do?
The above quote was made on 1-20-14 and was nine pages long back then. We've added a ton of new members to the forum since then. If you have the time, take a look at all the posts on this thread. It makes for some good reading. To coin a phrase..."So...what do you do?"
-
I have done a LOT of different things in my time. The most unusual job was being a snow maker for Vail mountain in Colorado for a few years shortly after I got out of high school in 79. I've done most jobs in the restaurant biz from dishwasher to cook. I've done concrete , drywall ,waterproofing basements, roofing and a little landscaping. I worked as a fabricator (cushion cutter on piece work) and loaded semis ( furniture on piece work ) in a furniture factory. I've done other things as well but the last 22 years I've been a roller operator on an asphalt crew. We have paved everything from small road patches to huge outlet malls. Pretty much anything you can think of that you can pave with blacktop I have done. I have rolled literally millions of tons of blacktop and Lord only knows how many miles I've put on rollers in my time, surely thousands. God willing I will be able to retire (Become work optional) in 3-4 years and move on to something else. Teaching my grandson ( he just turned 7 months old) how to make baits and fish is very high on my what to do next list. I also do volunteer work for my church and county/township parks departments in my spare time. Of all the many things I have done I think volunteering is probably the most rewarding.
-
Well I guess its my turn, especially since I have been around here awhile. I am a commercial mortgage banker based in Houston, TX. We place loans on most commercial properties (ie office, industrial, apartments, retail, medical). The firm I work for is owned and operated by Dad, brother and myself. I started fishing young on the golf course ponds behind my house when I was young as my dad used to stock bass in a few of the ponds. Got pretty good with a fly rod for a youngster for awhile but now I only fish saltwater (have caught a couple reds on fly which is awesome). There is nothing like bailing out of the boat and just wading a shoreline or reef and ripping the lips off of trout and reds. I guess you could call Matagorda, TX my second home. I been on a hunting lease down their for the past 17 years and have a strong passion for duck, goose, quail, dove and pig hunting which all can be done there. I also keep my boat down there and patrol East Matagorda Bay when I get the chance. I haven't been able to enjoy is much the last year as in the past as my wife has been battling brain cancer and gone through a years worth of chemo. But we are extremely blessed and as of Nov 1 she is done with chemo and is currently cancer free. This site and hobby were my escape from the stress and I think I have gotten pretty good at it (not as good as other obviously). It even allowed me to buy/sell/trade and exchange ideas a few to you guys on here. I would like to thank you guys and Do-It for all I have learned, and especially Ryan who made a donation to a cancer walk/run we did last year. Well that's my story.
P.S- Today we are celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary.

Really found this thread interesting and it made a great read. I am a high school science teacher and head football coach who has always loved the outdoors. I became a bit of an insomniac due to football and making my living on on how kids under 18 perform on the field. I really do love the challenge of trying to take these young individuals and teaching them how to become better men. Many of our players are raised in single parent homes or by their grandparents. Well anyway I found a way to utilize my time and get away from the constant thought of gameplanning and began working with what I loved to do as a kid, fishing. I began making my own rods and spinner baits. I then decided to give plastics a try, and since then plastics has become my favorite way to occupy my brain. This has given me the chance to talk to several people within the forum. I have had some very informative conversations with others about more than just baits and it has always been a pleasure. Thanks
-
Welcome guys, thanks for the intros. Great additions to this place.
-
There are not any negative words among anybody here, just a lot of positive compliments and awesome people sharing great info.
Stick around. Just stick around and you'll hear plenty of negative stuff. It is usually centered around either Tom or Mo, but often involves Jerry, Drew and sometimes Ryan, but that's usually behind his back. Cowards!
-
You gotta watch Drew and mo.
Mo will get you in to buying concrete sealer just to see if it works. Drew will beach your boat.
Denny is just Denny. He buys more used molds then anyone here.
-
It is usually centered around either Tom or Mo, but often involves Jerry, Drew and sometimes Ryan, but that's usually behind his back. Cowards!
Cowards? I tell Ryan he has long ears all the time. Denny is the only negative Nellie in this bunch. At last winter's get-together all he did was harp about the weather. Clear skies, no precip. Yes, the wind blew a little but the garbage cans weren't quite horizontal as the went by. And -15 degrees is just cool, not freezing cold like you complained.
-
Thanks for the interesting reading. Spent time in the guards while still in high school, then went active after a couple of years. Left the Army after Desert Storm. I started making jigs and spinners shortly afterwards. For some reason walked away from fishing and lure making for 10 year. Then I awoke from my brain failure and I still have some of those molds! I had considered myself a jack of all trades until I went back to school at 48. Now I say a master of two. Cabinet making and CNC programming and operation. I working on my airbrush skills but do I really get jealous seeing some of all of your work!!!!
-
I work for the NC Division of Marine Fisheries. I conduct the recreational fishing survey for them. Ita a pretty awesome job, kinda boring in the winter though!
-
I work in the emergency room as a nurse at UAB hospital. Still in school as well as working, trying to do the CRNA route eventually. Needless to say, time is a bit hard to come by most of the time but I really love my job so it works out. Best part of working in the ER is you never know what you'll see day in and day out. I really enjoy working in the trauma area of the department working on the car accidents, shootings, stabbings but not so much the burns mostly due to the smell :o Other than work I enjoy playing paintball as some of you may have seen in the hobbies thread, making lures, bass fishing, watching football and soccer. I'll be getting married next October so the fiance has kept me busy getting that planned and that's been both frustrating and exciting. Lots of stuff happening in the next year or so and who knows where that will take me!
-
I'm a reel repairman on Hawaii Island...
Is there any fresh water fishing opportunities on the Big Island? Me and saltwater don't co-exist well. I get out on a boat and Mt. Dennytubo's likely to erupt.

Hi I'm Daryl. I live just outside of Milwaukee, WI. I started an electrical apprenticeship right out of high school. I've been in the trade for 17 years now. Two years ago I started my own company (Brew City Electric) and I haven't looked back. I've actually been tackle crafting for 28 years now. At the age of eight I started my own custom bait "company" selling to a dozen or so bait shops on the way to my grandparents cabin in northern Wisconsin. My dad always joked that I was the only one he knew of that came back from vacation with more money than I left with. I Mostly tied crappie jigs, back when everything was vinyl paint! Now tackle crafting is strictly a hobby. I haven't played with shooting plastics yet, but it is my next area to try my hand at. Thanks for all the great info!

Welcome to the nut house... Run , run while you still can mooohaaaaahaa plastic is addicting as all heck but boy it's fun!

Hello Chad here, from Richmond, Indiana Manager for housekeeping department at local College.
Started out in the hobby 10 years ago tying crappie jigs and bluegill flies & powder painting jig heads. Adding airbrushing crankbaits afew years ago but jumped into soft plastics last year and love it, I wish I would have started this years ago.
Caught my first large mouth bass 2nd day of pouring even if it was only a small one at 8 inch, I was hooked. Since then I have ordered more plastic, molds and made afew molds myself. Only hand pouring now but with new molds out might give the injecting a try.
This past summer caught my biggest largemouth bass to date 4pound 11ounces on a watermelon/purple flake freedom fry rigged wacky. I hope to have more success this coming year.
Thanks to everyone on the forum for the knowledge and sharing with everyone. Thank You Chad

Welcome to the forum Chad. Freedom Fries are one of my favorite and most productive baits, I started out with an open pour fry mold and I love hand pouring baits, but there is nothing like cracking open an injection mold and pulling out perfect baits every time.

That's one nice looking bass you're holding in your avatar, Chad. I hope you have many more like that to come. Welcome to the forum.
-
Welcome aboard Chad, we're glad you're here. Make yourself at home. :)

Didn't know about this thread so here goes nothing...
I live in Eau Claire, Wi and deliver fuel for a co-op. I do only diesel and gasoline but we also handle propane. Our company also makes lawn fertilizer and ice melt. If you buy any Menards brand of this that is ours. Long hours but a great place to work.

I've been laying, sanding, and finishing hardwood flooring for 20 years now. Been on my own for a little over 16 or those years. Things were a little slower than I like in the winter starting in '08 so I bought a plow truck. Been growing that for the last 7 years as well as doing flooring. I'm to a point now that I pretty much just shut down the flooring side of things in the winter. Have a wife and 2 daughters that my world revolves around! I'm a pretty fortunate guy! Try to go camping or fishing as much as possible during spring, summer, and fall. I'll try to post a few pics of my flooring work and snow equipment.

This thread was started in June 2011. It has grown to 13 pages and has been read over 11,000 times. It's fun to go back and see who it is that we're communicating with daily. I mean, whoever would have thought that Tom used to be a circus clown, or that Mo worked his way through college as a male stripper. We are approaching 1,500 members on the forum and, as you will see, we come from all different walks of life. Join in the fray and let us know...What do you do?
-
At least Tom made them laugh. Mo? He generally made guys feel good about what they had swingin, so I guess he made them laugh too.

Hahahahaha

It seems this might have been the inspiration for his "magic" bait... shot in extra soft? ::)
-
Again...Hahahahaha

This thread was started in mid-2011 and has over 22,000 hits and 13 pages of responses. It was started by Jason Barnes, owner of Caney Creek Molds, and carried on by Do-It. This thread is a hoot and one of my favorites. We communicate with each other daily, yet don't really know much about one another. We're approaching 2,000 members in the forum, many of you new. Take a look at the older pages. You may be surprised at how much we have in common. When you're done kick it up a notch and "let us know what you do".

I was a residential electrician for 12 years, a family business and I grew up in it . I used to help in the summers in highschool and went to work and started trade school the day after I graduated . The recession hit our area hard and with kids and a mortgage I had to look elsewhere.
I started work at Snap-On 6 years ago. I started off in shipping , moved to receiving, then was promoted on to manage the raw materials in our machine shop. Our machine shop is the size of a Walmart .We run 3 shifts 24 hours a day 6 days a week. I am responsible for the bar stock steel, housings , components and other items needed for our machinists to run. We make all of our metal components for our tools in house as well as heat treat, and powder coat our housings. Our Snap-On plant makes cordless and pnuematic tools. Truly a blessing to work for a family oriented company that has given Americans jobs for 95 years now. It helps that they have great pay and benefits.

After 35 years in Marketing and Sales (most of it in thermoplastics) I "retired" to teaching at Winona State University. It's a lot harder than I thought...but I get 4 months off over the summer to fish!
-
I think I answered this about 5 years ago or so, but things have changed, so here is mine to keep it going- I spent 17 years in middle management in a very large financial services firm which will remain unnamed :) , and then the Lord called me out to learn how to make soft plastics and jigs! ...which really was the path that lead me into ministry. I have spent the last 4 years as one of the pastors at my local church, and beginning October 31, 2016 I am getting ready to move from Oregon to Louisiana. For now, back to the custom bait biz, and the future is wiiiiide open. (if those last 6 words reminded you of and then made you start singing a song, then thankfully I am not the only one.)
Let's keep this going!

Hey Andy,
When did Minnesota get a University?

Good update fellas.

I work as a Tool & Die Maker, been at it for 42 yrs. I live just south of the Quad Cities on the Illinois, Iowa border.

I was a hog buyer for 18 years. Worked in about 5 states throughout the midwest. In 1995 I accepted a job as livestock manager of a packing plant in Southeast Iowa. About 11 years later I decided to open my own hunting and fishing store. It was a good business, but many, many long days. 10 years later I sold the business. I still do alot of tackle building. Used to build custom rods until my eyesight just got too weak to do quality work. I am a counter sales person for a hog equipment business at this time. It's a good job and allows me more time for family and fishing. Plus the insurance is good. Always been building lures, rods, or something fishing related since I was a young kid. Life has been good to me.
-
I still work at the family business. Car repair shop and we have tow trucks.
-
I coach college football. Enjoy everyday of my life not working. I do miss out on a lot of good fishing weather though.
-
Cool. Who do you coach for R ? My nephew plays DIV III ball for Whitewater.
-
I coach a NAIA team in Tennessee right now. Bethel University. Played her and graduated here twice. They just keep finding ways to keep me here haha
-
I've been retired for two years now! Live on a lake and have a large garden. Making baits, fishing and hunting , gardening and church work occupy all my time. It's a great retirement!

I work as an adult probation officer for a circuit court. I supervise an avg of 80 adults that have been given alternative sentences for various felony crimes (most are drug related) to ensure they follow court ordered conditions. I help clients seek out substance and metal health treatment, employment opportunities, conduct drug screens, do reports to the court, and work with local law enforcement agencies as well as several federal agencies in the sharing of information about allegations of on going crimes. In just over 5,000 days I hope to post a similar report to what Muskygary has accomplished in the above post.

I did a 21 year hitch in the Air Force (Security Policeman and later as a marksmanship instructor). Retired in 89 and worked as a police officer in a small missouri town (7 years). Then I pretty much farted around in the retail biz till I retired for good in 2010. Now I fish.
