I was wondering if anyone here uses the powder paint airbrush to do spinnerbaits and stuff. I've been doing it for quite some time, I was trying to find a way to do it and while searching for different air brushes I came across the Badger model 260 hobby sand blaster and it was perfect. I have it down pretty good now to be able to help people who want to start or who have tried but are having trouble with it. The one thing you have to realize is you can't get fine detail, what I try to do is use it to blend colors and have then transition fron one to the other with fading effects, it works but it isn't perfect. Below are some spinnerbait heads I did with by spraying powder paint, if you have any questions I'd be more than happy to answer them.

You seem to have that process pretty well mastered Smalljaw. Nice, nice work.

Wow, I really like the bars on those. I've got the power paint spray brush from TJ's but haven't tried it yet. Intend to use it on spinner blades for walleye rigs.

I do my base coat and clear coat with an electro static gun .but i put my colors on with an air brush . That is unles I'm just doing a few then I tap it on .
Looks like you got it down pat . Not only that but our tastes in color must be pretty close . I would have gone with those exact color schemes . With that said I gotta say dang fine work.

I've tried doing the same thing, but without the airbrush. I'd dip a small brush in powder paint, heat up an ultra minnow jig and then dapple the brush over the jig head. Different colors over different areas of the jig head. I would usually tie in some bucktail and walla...something different.
BTW, mine were nowhere near as nice as yours. Good job.

Thanks for the kind words, I started doing it with the hobby sand blaster because I couldn't do the brush and tap method the Denny mentioned. I tried regular paint with a regular single action airbrush but the paint fumes were giving me pounding headaches like you wouldn't believe and so I quit doing it and soon after I discovered powder paint. I loved powder but the only problem was 1 color and it was done, I couldn't get a good multi color spinnerbait or jig head and the hobby sand blaster was an accidental find that to this day works great, and not long after that purchase I started seeing the powder paint airbrush which I've come to find is the same Badger hobby sand blaster that I got way back in 2005. One tip I can give you is use a compressor and and play around with air pressure and distance, you can't get detail but you can blend colors pretty well.

I have been considering the purchase of a powder paint spray gun from TJs Tackle. Other sites also market the same unit and it's pretty similar to the Badger. Has anyone don e a side by side comparison?

I use it on my saltwater jigs.
I dip the basecoat (Usually white) then spray the back so I get a 2 tone effect.
Usually I follow this with a dip in UV blast for a clear topcoat.
It works great and people really like how they turn out.

Here are some saltwater jigs I have done by dipping the base coat then accenting with the airbrush.
I didn't really need a lot of detail just wanted a little two toned effect.
These are little 16oz jigs with stick on ladderbacks etc. by WTP.

This is a 25oz version of the same jig. On these jigs I dipped the basecoat of superglow white then added the airbrushed blue and green colors. Next I added the red gills with the brush tap method. then a clear coat of UV blast. Finally I cured them in my toaster oven.
I did redo the hooks to the traditional butterfly setup later. An assist hook to a solid ring and the solid ring attached to the jig eye via splitring.
This was the first time I had done these jigs and as you can see I messed up the paint on the bottom one.
I sealed the 3d eyes in with Devcon 2 ton epoxy.

These are from some custom molds I had made just for me in 16 oz,20 oz,and 25 oz.
These are for fishing Halibut/Lingcod in Alaska's Cook Inlet which has the worlds second largest tides and requires heavy tackle at times.

Small looks great how can you blend so good with powder turn down air a lot??
