Title: Garden extravaganza

Ma and I ate well tonight. I was shifting stuff in the meat freezer and found a sirlion steak I vacuum packed about in March and figured it was time to dine on it. A bit later today I was picking tomatoes and came across a couple of Shitaki mushrooms on my logs and they were , well, huge. Like as big as a plate huge. So I didn't have to run to the store for mushrooms to go with my steak. Then we decided some of our newly dug spuds would go good with the steak and mushies. And of course a couple sliced tomatoes to round things out. Lets just say we ate very good tonight.

I noticed several large nodes on my shitaki logs so I am assuming I'll have more to dine on later this week. Maybe I'll have to grill some porkchops to go with the next round. Maybe I'll just have sauted mushrooms with a little onion served over a big ol burger. The garden is coming to an end now but those shitakis will keep going right up until it freezes seriously.

Gotta love a meal right off the lawn, eh?

Got a love the mushrooms when it comes too steak. Sounds like the garden has been good to you this year. mike 8)

Yes Mike, the garden was a dandy again but I was seriously worried early on what with the cold spring. We dug the rest of the potatoes yesterday and the sweet potatoes. I think we got 17 pounds of sweet potatoes and about 120 pounds of red, Yukon gold and russets in combination. I took a chance on the mushrooms a few years back and the logs I have inoculated just keep getting better. I'm going to start new shitaki logs next spring and a couple poplar towers for oyster mushrooms too. I could live on mushrooms I think.

If I tried any "home grown" mushrooms I'll either be dead or watching elephants fly counter clockwise in a pool of jelllo  :'( sound mmm good eatting how did you get em to grow on a log

Tom I hear ya on living on mushrooms  they add a different texture and taste to jut about any meal. Grilled portobello are almost like eating meat. mike

I get the spawn plugs from a Wisconsin company. They provide all of the know-how you need to grow several varieties right at home. I am busy right now but will post the company's info tonight.
