Title: Fish....its what's for dinner
Post by: ctom on 10/15/13 12:49 UTC
I got up early this morning and hit the river docks of the Mississippi River and came home smelling like fish. I pailed enough crappies and sunfish for our dinner tonight.

I made up some baits that have the Cherry Bomb scent from UpperHands cooked into it plus a little put in each bag and tried identical baits without any of the Upperhands scent but sprayed with Gulp alive juice. I'd say it was 50-50, real hard to say which worked better today. However, color was something to be keen on. I worked thru about 8 different color combinations in the plastics before hitting fish using the bluegill/chartreuse tail. The 1/48 ounce head was left un-painted today and the keeper wire worked flawlessly. I did remove just a hair of metal on that cavity of the new mold to allow me to cast a #8 sickle hook in 1/48 so I could use smaller baits.

I walked out on the docks at 6:50 am in light rain and brutal winds. Thankfully there were enough boats on the water in the slips to block the wind some. With about 18 feet being the average depth, no float was used since a deep low pressure area seemed to have the fish buried pretty much. All of the decent crappies and sunfish came tight to the dock pilings and within 4 feet of the bottom. 2 walleyes decided to visit, one being about 28" while the other would have been a snack for the larger one.

The rain was on and off during my 4 hours of jigging, never really coming down hard but the rain gear was worn the whole time in spite of temps near 60 degrees. The wind cut right thru a sweatshirt without the rain jacket on. Still, it was good to get out and the fish dinner resulting from the trip will be welcomed tonight.
