Title: My first Smallie Bugs of the season
Post by: smalljaw on 10/24/13 15:57 UTC
It is now time to gear up, the temp here has finally dropped a lot and moving baits are working but you also know that in the next couple of weeks you will need to slow down and use subtle baits like hair jigs if you want to get bit. I just tied these jigs up for a friend that wanted a dozen, I call them "smallie bugs" because they look like a bug in the water when you crawl them on the bottom. These are real simple but work great even without a trailer, they are just small 1/8oz football head jigs with a Mustad 32786 hook in a 1/0 size, then you tie in some silicone or living rubber, I chose black and coffee colored bio-silk silicone for these. Once you tie in the silicone you add buck tail, I add a small layer all the way around using minimal wraps to secure the hair and then another layer is tied over the top of the bottom layer to make it a bulky jig. Once you start adding the second layer you cinch down with each clump of hair you add, this is going to cause it to flair out so now when you move it in the water it will compress and expand for a good amount of movement but subtle movement. That is all there is to  this jig, I add some flash with the silicone and a couple of strands at the end but it isn't required and I've done well with and without flash on these jigs. I use this style jig in water temps from the low 50s down to mid 40s, when it gets down to like 43 I'll opt for the round head buck tail jig with a thinner profile.

Nice ties.  Down here the guys would want some orange hair in them.
