Title: Ultra Perch
Post by: smalljaw on 12/15/13 09:43 UTC
My snow day project, I was organizing tackle and noticed I was short on the perch pattern spinnerbait so I decided to pour a few. This is a 3/8oz Ultra Minnow spinnerbait with .035 stainless wire and a 4/0 Mustad 32608 spinnerbait hook. The paint is all powder paint and there is actually 6 colors but my photography skills are poor at best. Anyway, the belly is white with orange throat, the body color is a blend of transparent gold, candy yellow, and candy green and then a black back, it is hard to see but I also put some faded black bars just for a litte realism since I can't do fine detail with powder paint. The skirt is 42 strands, it has some yellow perch real baitfish silicone, black silicone, orange baitfish silicone and a bit of pearl silicone, the skirt is tied on with green 26 gauge wire. The blades are fluted willows even though my poor picture taking skills don't show it, there is a size #4.5 gold fluted willow on top connected to a size #2 Worth ball bearing swivel, and a size #4 silver fluted willow on bottom attached by a size #3 Worth clevis. The eyes on this are cool, they are actually pearl blue but it is so reflective it picks up colors from the body of the bait as well as from other light sources, this is one color 3D eye that can be used on any color bait and it will work.

That is an awesome spinnerbait. How do you make the head like that with powder paint ? I have to heat the head to make it stick and then heat it again to make it gloss. Yours looks like you air brush it.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I appreciate it. I sometimes get too specific with my baits as I make different versions for rivers versus lakes by changing blades sizes, spacing, and wire diameters. This perch pattern bait is made to be a shallow runner without being burned, I used medium spacing to keep some vibration but the blade sizes are only 1/2 size apart and this I found is optimal spacing for lift. Now if I was going to make a burner the wire coming out of the nose of the body would be shorter and it would be at a steeper angle. the blades would smaller also, a #4 and a #3 with more spacing, and now I'm rambling but I mess with these a lot. Anyway, Lamar, the powder paint is applied with a hobby sand blaster, a Badger model 260 to be exact and it looks like an air brush. It is impossible to get fine detail with just regular powder paint unless you change it with powder water but that is another story. What the sand blaster does is it allows me to spray the powder on, while I can't do fine detail it does make for excellent color blending, fading and color transition. You can't see it in my bad picture but the top of the body is more green and it fades down into more of a gold color, it is how I do perch color by layering the colors starting with transparent gold and then going over it with candy yellow and then finishing with candy green but then I go a little higher on the body with each color so you can see the transition as it goes from a lighter to a darker color while being seamless, pretty neat actually.

The paint job is outstanding, but the lure as a whole reeks of quality and fine craftsmanship.

Fantastic work, Smalljaw!  Now make another with the blades powdered w/ the same gold/yellow/green/black color scheme and some green in the skirt and send it my way!  ;) I may have to check out that sand blaster rig.

I disagree with painting the blades. I've always had better luck with a gold and silver blade combo. With the blades you have on it you could burn that bait. For smallmouth it would be perfect. The only time I use painted blades are either all white or one white and one yellow for muddy water.

I'm a firm believer in non-painted blades myself, Lamar.  I fish a lot of muddy or stained water and gold is my go to color.  Solid painted blades, orange is a hot color for me, yellow is pretty good too.  Using solid colors, I would not want the painting scheme I mentioned.  However, using the candy color powder paint lets the blade shine through and gives a different look than a solid painted blade.  Last summer I found a pretty cheap/generic spinnerbait in excellent condition (really, looks more like they hung it in that tree on the first cast out of the package) while fishing a river.  Hammered blades, 1 gold willow 1 silver Colorado.  Chartreuse, green, white color pattern on a crappy skirt.  Not my kind of spinnerbait, but maybe useful in the right conditions.  Recently I coated the blades with candy lime and it completely changed the look to something that just might catch fish.  The blades look like they actually have more shine than they did before.
