Title: Dropshot plus jika
Post by: jmatheny9 on 01/07/14 21:41 UTC
I'm new to the whole drop shotting thing and just ha an idea so let me know what you think, good or bad so I don't waste my time lol

What if you did the normal drop shot with a small plastic on the hook. Then instead of using a dropshot weight, throw on a jika rig with a bait imitating a craw and drag it across the bottom?

Keep in mind I'm fishing from the bank so it won't be vertical

not sure about the jika rig but a lot people around here use a football jig or a stand up jig for the weight instead and believe they do pretty well with it also hope this helps

Nothing new there..I have used the jig/dropshot rig for awhile now.. I like to use it in winter for deep bass..   ;D

Great idea, how about Carolina rigging but instead of a weight use a football head craw and tie a leader off the eye of the hook about 18 inches long and put a floating jerk bait on it. That way it looks like a small fish is about to eat the craw. Big bass hate competition

This is good news... Right up my alley as I don't have to travel for winter bass!

Crabbybass showed me the jika rig and I think I like it more than a stand up solely because it does about the same thing and I can use a wide gap hook lol

I like your idea too MO, it would almost be a whole new type of fishing lol. My stepdad was telling me how he would put an egg sinker on his line and tie a small floating jerk bait on. He would cast on a bass bed during spawn and the jerk bait would float to the top. Then you could jerk it and it would shoot towards the bed. Bass would try to protect their eggs and bam! (Never saw it happen, just a story)

I often use a 1/8 oz jig as my bottom weight for drop shot panfish.  Top hook is bare hook or up to 1/16th oz. jig.  Depending where and when I fish this rig I may target 2 or 3 species at a time, ie perch on the bottom jig, crappies on the top.  Once in awhile they hit at the same time.

That picture looks like a wicked cat rig  :-\.   The furry kind, that is.  In my house you would be in big trouble in about 15 seconds.

Cat wasn't in the room and dog was asleep! No worries :)

I use a 1/8 to 1/4 oz. Jig on the bottom VMC spin shot hook on top. I use this set up from shore for walleye white bass and crappies. Only smaller jigs for the last two. Mike 8)

I use a shakey head on bottom when I'm drop shoting.  Works pretty good.

I'm in WW's camp on this. The set-up makes a super walleye/sauger rig and is a true sneak attack on crappies.

I frequently use the CC Glider on the bottom rig  with a dragon tail or Fry bait above it. Killer on Walleyes, Sauger and smallmouth.

I  call it Power Dropshotting! (not my term...there are a couple threads on this if I remember correctly).

And to think that only a couple pools north of you we call it a Dubuque rig. lol

At dams we might have to use large heavy jigs to anchor these rigs if the current is up. The 3/4 ounce Do-It Flathead jig gets the nod for this job. It amazing how many sauger we get two feet above the bottom jig on the Dropshot hook.

I would have called it that too....but I never remember how to spell Dubuque !

In addition, InFisherman (I think) had a segment on this last year

Why does In-Fisherman do a segment on a ploy like this when we've been doing this for years? This was hot 40 years ago! Did they contact you?

The drop shot is a good year round tactic I've even caught musky on the 3"gulp fry and caught them on a regular basis and walleye and bass love it to,I'm not sure about the other technique you mentioned. Jay

From what I've read...the Jika rig that he has it the picture would probably work really well fished from shore, it would help keep that bottom bait a little off the bottom so it's easier to see and from what I'v read (I've never tried a Jika rig but it's on my list for next year) it's a really good rig to cast and retrieve vs. the more vertical nature of the way I typically drop shot.

When I "power drop shot" I tie to a VMC Spin shot hook and then drop straight down to the bottom jig.  I mostly fish it vertically  ...but a cast and bounce of the bottom works good too.

My uncle had a mold for this rig. I think he designed and made the mold himself. I'll check and see if he still has it, if so I'll post a pic of it.

Before the drop shot technique took the tournament world by storm in the 1990s, I would use a 3-way swivel and finesse worm or something similar above my jig for walleyes.  After my exposure to the drop shot rig following it's Lake Mead introduction, I did away with my 3-way rig for walleyes and tied what I called the "double dropper"... (same thing, different name)... and I have always "long lined" this rig, unless I was using it through the ice.  It's a great rig to pick up extra fish and doesn't tangle like the 3-way did.
