Title: dipping baits with eyes
Post by: andyendorf on 01/08/14 19:29 UTC
I have got far enough with my skills to make some nice looking baits, but nice looking doesn't mean they work. my question to you guys is when u dip your baits after putting eyes on them what is the best way to do it? do I just dip enough of the bait to cover the eyes or dip practically the whole bait? and again to emphasize I'm looking for what works the best (as in keeping the bait doing the same thing it's intended to do as far as the movement) thanks guys for the help.

I just heat up clear plastic until it's up to temp and then just do a quickish dip with the bait by holding it with my hand. I usually just dip a little past the eyes, but I do dip the entire bait up to the legs if I do frogs.

Me too. I also have a bucket of water that I drop them in after I dip them to cool the plastic.

I think the key to dipping eyes is hot plastic. I get it very hot 360-370with the understanding that I will not get many reheats before it browns. (Even with stabilizer) when it browns it I use it for dark colors.
I dip and hold the bait into the plastic for 5-10 seconds that way the clear melts into the bait body which seals the eyes better. I like to dip my baits in worm oil to cool them instead of water.

How do you onto the baits when you dip the small baits like fries?

Very carefully haha, but seriously carefully. You can use a needle nosed pliers to make it easier but you'd still need a steady hand for something an inch or smaller. I would end up with plastic all over the pliers if I tried ha. It'll take practice.

I dip the entire bait up to the legs or tail especially if i've used a lam.plate because sometimes the two colors will pull apart,if i use my twin injector i just dip alittle past the eye,but if you dip the whole bait it does get a good shine to it.this is what works for me and i'm pretty sure theres more direction to come from others.
