Title: Craft Fur "Sissy Jigs"
Post by: smalljaw on 04/07/14 15:44 UTC
These are 1/8oz ball jigs with a 1/0 sickle hook, they are called sissy jigs as they have a small profile and are fished on light line and can even be used under a float.  The ones in this picture are minnow patterns made of craft fur, I tied them two different ways for a friend to try out and see which he likes better. The top jig has a type of flash tied in first, it is called Senyo's predator wrap, I made a single wrap and then tied in gray craft fur for the body, Do-it black frost craft fur for the belly, and black craft fur for the back with some red hackle barbs tied in for the throat just for a little color. The bottom jig is basically the same as the top only I tied in the gray body first and then the flash wrap over top of that and finished off with the belly and back material with nothing used for a throat. These are new to me and I've only used and tied them for 2 years, the one thing I can tell you is that they are effective, I use them in cold water around docks and under cut banks and around flats with sparse cover, these things can be amazing at times which is why I keep making them as I do lose them. Give it a try, I know they don't look like much but they can coax bites from fish that turn their nose up at everything else.

SJ - excellent as always!!!  Went and looked the stuff up - $7.  With that 4" length it looks great on the 1/8th oz. but can you see it being wasted on 1/16th or smaller heads?  or would you cut it off and tie in that way?

Thanks for the great report!!

FM, I actually cut a small section and cut the small thread the flash is attached to and used the strands like normal flash on a 1/16oz jig. The color I'm using is called barred UV so it is a silver with black bars but reflect purple light because of the UV treatment, I simply tied 2 strands in and folded it over and tied the other half in on the opposite side of the jig and trimmed the excess, it looks awesome. It comes in a long card and looks like 1 big length but it isn't, it is actually like 5 separate lengths, it is pricy but it goes a long way, the jigs in the pic are tied in as it is meant to be tied in but I have used it like normal flash and it looks great like that.

Smalljaw, who's hook do you use, see any difference in one brand over another?  Haven't used many sickle hooks , but think I'm going to try them.
