Title: Help build the my room
Post by: MO QWACK on 05/26/14 19:01 UTC
The wife and I are about half way done building our dream house ( we have small dreams lol ) and now it's time to design the pouring room!!!!!! It's about 10 by 40 in the basement. I told the electrician do wire it so I can run compressor, microwave and toaster oven all at the same time. It had plugs every 4 feet. The only thing this room is for is pouring, airbrushing, fishing stuff and fish/deer processing  :P  I have it plumbed for a nice big sink.
Any ideas are welcome. So if you could do it all over again how would you Do-It

 Hope your doing well Mo,
Good ventilation and tons of light are what I need in a shop space. Post some pics of your progress

Hope the hand is healing nicely. Storage is a problem we probably all have.  Make sure you over size your work station. I have a whole house fan for venting my lead and plastic stations with a control on the fan.  I'm in need of more lighting

A well thought out storage plan for molds, plastisol, tools, vises, glitters, colorants, hooks, finished baits, drying rack, lead, Pyrex cups, as well as all the little stuff.  Good luck, because you will forget stuff.

Almost forgot...you'll also need a hook heavy enough to hold your new fireproof boots, bibs, gloves, coat and shielded hood.

He shouldn't need the hooks with a good sprinkler system Denny. Maybe we should get in touch with Crystal and have her hide his stash of accelerants.

Glad you're mending quickly Mo!  Besides storage, lighting, and a fire alarm; you need a fridge and a good sound system.  And maybe a light box for photo shoots.

Have one part of that room with a drain in it.  For when you are cutting up your deer.  You could hang it right in the room and hose the deer down and everything.  Also be sure to put up a lot of lights.

I just had a new shop built into our new home last year. I had a big industrial hooded exhaust fan installed above my work bench. I have ample lighting and brought in a 100amp sub panel for additional expansions. I had them install a formica counter top running the length of the shop wall and have the other 3 walls completely lined with peg board. I also have a window which aids in venting and allowing fresh air to come into the shop. I crack one of our garage doors to assist with air flow. Under the counter I had shelves built in for the molds etc. I then built additonal shelves above and next to our work space for colorants/flake. The shop is 11' x 11' which can be tight at times but is sufficient for the time being. I plan to extend it an additonal 4' next year. Good luck with the build, I know its an exciting time for you. At least it was for us.

Jeff

I think the hooded ventilation system makes perfect sense if you pour a lot of baits.  I wish I had done it years ago.  TPO and I have been talking about moving in the next year or so to a lakeside smaller home.  The lake, by the way, is filled with giant bass. A proper ventilation system will be one of the first things that I have installed.  Andy is an expert in the scientific aspects of pouring plastic baits. He insists that even with a ventilation system you still have to wear a proper mask.  I don't think we can overlook the dangers associated with long time exposure to the stuff we use every day pouring plastic baits.  Better safe than sorry.

A Minnesota lake, Denny? We have lots of lakes with giant bass....ask Andy he'll tell ya. And as you know its only cool a couple days in January so the weather adjustment wouldn't be a problem. They sell ventilation hoods here too.

Dedicated 15/20A receptacles would be the way to go.  Depending on proximity to sink, GFI breaker or outlets would be required.  As others have said, venting, lighting and lots of bench space.  There never seems to be enough bench space.  Pick your equipment locations and install your dedicated receptacles and then install a bunch of others on a couple of common circuits for anything else you add.  Storage is key too, properly organizing your stuff so it's easy to find, get to and hopefully put back.  With the lighting, you can do what I call poor man dimming for finer detail tasks.  Get a fixture with multiple ballasts and 3 or 4 tubes.  1 switch controls 2 lamps.  The other would control the other lamp/lamps.  In a 3 lamp form, you get 33/66 and 100 lighting levels depending on which switches you have on.  This way you only pay for the extra light level when you want it.  LED pot lights offer free dimming and I've been pretty happy with the CREE ones I got from Home Depot.

I've been using a bench I made from melamine wood.  It was cheap and the plastic doesn't seem to adhere to it.  It makes cleaning it up easy.  Formica would be the way to go if budget allows as mentioned by another member.
