The diet of an adult pan fish, especially Bluegill and the rest of the Sunfish family, including Crappie, mainly consists of aquatic insect larvae (mayflies, caddisflies, dragonflies). That is the motivation behind the development of this mold. A mayfly larvae imitation it is, and we’ve made it in a size that fishes nicely and entices bites. The bait itself measures 2” from antennae to tail tips with the body portion itself measuring in at 1-5/16” by 5/16” dia. at its widest point.
Mayday Mayfly 2”, 6 cavity
Item #95280 = $89.00

Have a very safe and enjoyable 4th of July weekend everyone !!

WOW
Need to get me some of that to try for Trout. Super glue to hook and have an instant Trout Fly

I would dare say that looks like it should have even better fish catching potential than the crickets (not from a Do-it mold) that were posted some months back... I'm betting the tail (and legs) will jiggle almost effortlessly. It's a shame I'm not much for panfish when there is open water, but I think I just found my new ice fishing go to!
-
Small jig under a bobber, got to be good! Especially in a river current. Maybe later on in a four inch size for msmallmouth?
-
That is a very realistic mold of a common aquatic insect. I predict there will be a lot of fish caught on these baits. Including some real surprise catches. Great job Do-It.

Yes, it's an Insect, but this bait will NICELY double as a Grass Shrimp.
-
I'm gonna stick that little puppy on the end of a fly line just to see what happens.

Perfect as a Damselfly nymph....or the Hexagenia (Fish Fly) that we get here. In the old days they had to get out the snow plows to clean them off the bridge roadways!
Two years ago a swarm of Hex's hatched in LaCrosse, Wi and blew all the way up here to Winona (about 30 miles)...they tracked the cloud of bugs on radar... stretching the entire distance!

The Hex hatch is a really big deal out here for many fly anglers...for many, it's akin to The Second Coming. The larve bury themselves in the mud and hatch at dusk on warm, sultry nights. The Hex compared to a Blue Wing Olive is like comparing a grape to a softball. I've spent many an hour on the Fall River sitting in a small boat waiting for those bugs to start popping. When they did, big bruiser rainbows and browns would start slurping them down as fast as they came up. We'd start throwing to the many rises and when it got dark we'd throw to the sound of the "slurp" all the while giggling like little girls. This new mold brings back fond memories of times past.

May Fly hatches on Joe Wheeler were epic when I was much younger. Bridge closures, all public lights turned off, billboards pulled down, etc. Now you can't find a hatch large enough to draw fish hardly.
-
Was in La Cross once when they needed the snow plow to get 3"of them off the roads. Panfish & trout slayer. Great look bait. 8)

any plans on a laminate plate for this. i really think this would also be great for barred surf perch over here in southern california
good stuff.

Yeah, I remember the plows coming out... and the young punks with cars whipping donuts through the piles of them, just like wet grass... but maybe that was just a Wisconsin thing.

I've actually put my hands on these on let me tell ya the pics don't do it justice! It's amazing! The craftsmanship on the mold is second to none! It will make an awesome crappie tube just by pulling the legs off. Truly amazing bait. I would love to take it home to south Louisiana and toss it next to some coon tail grass!!

I had a handful of proto-type baits that were slightly smaller than this finished product and the sunfish and crappies ate them nicely. This is one of those small baits that I can see as fun to work with and having a lot of tweak room. The Mayday Mayfly is a nice bait.

I see that those pictured are laminated or at least look laminated. This bait isn't so large that a plate is really going to be needed. I have some ideas that will get spoon fed and if that doesn't cut it, I'll run to hobby lobby and get a piece of punch metal and make one. $4.00 and twenty minutes.
-
I would like to see the smaller prototype - Ctom. With a 5/16th max width this bait may be a little large for many bluegill fishermen around here. Won't know until I play with it; but it is a really nice looking bait.
Jerry V - is the wide part of the body full round or is it more elliptical?
-
I have some of the original proto types of this bait and they were smaller than the current version but not much and I had no trouble at all with sunfish eating it. Some of the crappies I got using those simple inhaled the whole nine yards and required some major surgery to jet my rig back. I saw the current bait when I stopped by the plant a couple weeks ago and I think a decent sunfish won't have any problems getting hooked.
I've never really been too wowed by bug baits but this one sure got hit and I see some really good potential for working colors with it.

I agree as I have caught sunnies (as well as crappies and perch) on bass gear.
However, when the bite can get tough, such as late winter, I am planning on just using half the bait, either offering a nice morsel with the legs section or teasing them with the tickling of the tail. Both of these I see as sure things on an ice-jig, and it will just be a matter of finding their preference when it happens.
-
Those three tail filaments and about 4 of the segments attached to them would be an outstanding ice bait.
I've been shooting this mold off and on this afternoon. I've done some nice belly color laminates and a couple tail color shots....much easier than messing with those legs. I have a box just itching to get filled with this bait in a bunch of color combos.
The more I shoot this mold the more I enjoy it. I can see this mold becoming as much a pet as the Ring-It or Thump Grub. I have a couple different purple/chartreuse numbers done and a Junebug/chartreuse bait too, but mostly I have been focusing on more natural colors with muted oranges for bellies and greens and amber backs. I have some interesting looking baits and the are really quite life-like. The legs, if I want them black, I now color with a black sharpie pen. I threw in the towel on putting those dink legs back in the mold.

Ice fishing is my least favorite method of gettin' after them, but I'm really anticipating the panfish bite this coming winter because of this bait... if Do-it would not have made such a dandy mold, you would never here me use anticipation and winter in the same sentence.
-
I love the mold and can see its cold weather use....but I still am not anticipating, nor waiting for winter or ice. I had enough last season to get me thru for a few years to come.
-
I agree on the cold and ice... (maybe I should have underscored "if" and "never" in my statement as well)... but that is the only time I regularly pursue panfish because I can't flip for bass, grind for muskies, or long-line for walleyes at that time.

I'd like this in a 100 cavity mold =)

We're always willing to help with problems.
Let's see.... 6 goes into 100 16.66666 times, so 17 molds clamped together should do it. You'll have to work out the spreader for your injector. Or play rabbit with it.
No problem at all except maybe for that injector issue, but now that the hard work is done maybe Mo, aka cobble jockey inc., can pitch in and help with that. Oh, and if you are working with him and he has an injector in his hands, be sure you are wearing an apron. Things can get messy with him using injectors, this statement based on how he capped off sprues during January's get together....more like re-surface the table.

Now that's funny!

Anyone below the Mason Dixon Line fishing this with success?

I am I am but only below by 12 miles ::) it's a great bait ! I pinch the head off and fish is it like a tube jig. It's very impressive!!!!
