Title: Dog Days
Post by: ctom on 08/23/14 11:36 UTC
After the miserable winter we had here, the summer has finally caught up and the infamous Dog Days of August are reigning supreme. For the last couple days we've had heat and humidity. I woke up this morning and took a peek out the kitchen window and it looked like fog but was the humid air. Looking out across the parkland behind the house the air was blue with humidity. I was going to do some plastics today but the cups come out of the mw covered in foam and it takes several re-heats to get that stuff to go away so I guess I'll do what I did yesterday.....cast some more jigs. I am getting really well caught up on jigs of late.

I'm thinking long and hard about keeping the boat out of the garage over the winter and enclosing a portion of that area for a shooting/casting room with better lighting and better ventilation. I can heat the area real easy for winter use and I can build in an air conditioner for summer use. I have a canvas cover for the boat and the outboard can come off and put on a stand along a garage wall when its cold. When I built the garage I put 400 amps of service in it and thus far use one line for lights and one for outlets so I have plenty of wiggle room there. I have one corner that could handle this very nicely and maybe the boat could stay in even....I need to lay things out on the floor and ponder this a little closer. Having a controlled environment would sure as heck make working with plastic and lead a whole lot more agreeable, especially when crud like this thick air decides to settle in.

Move to Mississippi and we'll show you high humidity.

We've had a pretty good summer up until the last week or so. It's dang near unbearable to fish all day now. Maybe I've just gotten a little smarter with age and just have better sense.  :o

Roger that basskat. I worked a summer in Memphis TN years ago doing concrete work on the Firestone Tire factory roof. I don't know how you guys do it dealing with the heat and humidity. I'll take snow and ice over those summers any day.

Re: Storing your boat outside come winter. I may be preaching to the choir here but make sure your to keep your cover cleared of snow and ice. I didn't check my cover a few winters back and wound up with a block of ice in my boat about 1 x 4 x 6 foot.  What a treat that was thawing/chipping that out without a heated garage. Hint, Pull your drain plug too. I didn't = DOH! I only have one boat now so the boat stays in the garage all year when I'm not using it.

So, your thinking of making your shooting/casting room a permanent fixture then? You would have to heat it 24/7 unless you wanted to tote your liquid supplies too and from the house each time you wanted to shoot. Humidity could be an issue for your hooks so maybe a dehumidifier would be in order too? Yes, I have been mulling over doing the same thing with my garage in case you couldn't tell. LOL
