Title: Working on some crickets
Post by: jl3140 on 10/10/14 20:29 UTC
Here's a fly that I tied up today. I'm trying to find a decent cricket pattern and this is a scaled down hopper pattern. I think it might be what I'm looking for. Sorry about the poor quality photos, I took them with my iPad

Nice job!

I used to be able to do stuff like that. Its a bummer getting old and eyes that don't see well enough to focus on that small stuff.

Blue gill killer right there!!! Will the legs make her float?

A little tic-tic followed by a little twitch and that fly will be gobbled up quick.  Good job.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I'm hoping to give it a test out sometime in the next week if I have time.

Mo: Everything on it will make 'er float haha, the body is foam, the wing is deer, the legs are rubber, and the sighter is a poly yarn that doesn't absorb water.

I don't think Mo's quite convinced.  He can be a little dense ya know.  Maybe you should send me say a half dozen of those little fly ties. I'll get them wet a few times and try to convince him that they do indeed float.  I can't promise that I won't need another half dozen to get the job done, but I'll try.

That's a very nice tie, good work.  I'll bet it's a killer in hopper colors too.   ;)

Haha well I'd better just send with a dozen and a half to make sure

I'm hoping to try it out in hopper colors when I get the foam I ordered a few days ago. I ended up getting 6 different colors I think, black, white, green, yellow, blue, and red. I'll be able to make some pretty interesting hoppers, crickets, and beetles with those colors haha.

For anyone who wants 2mm foam for fly tying, definitely go with craft foam (I got mine from amazon for $6 free shipping) instead of getting the name brand foam. Each sheet of foam I'm getting is 8.5"x11" or so and two sheets of each color.

Great looking tie! I know those will catch fish. I've always wondered if something like that tied on a jighead would work. The body would give the fish something to hang on and the deer hair would probably release some bubbles when you pulled it. Foam rubber on a jig! Something else to try.

I think it would look pretty cool on a jig, you could even modify it a bit to make it look like a hellgrammite.

Slight side note here: Where is a good place to get small jigs? Small enough for little bug ties, not sure exact size though. Recommendations?

Jerry I take back 33? of most bad things I say about you ;D because you are absolutely correct. Lol when I test flies I'm more or a durability tester. If they survive me and those whippy sorry  no good willow branches then they will survive a nuclear blast

Most of the guys on my fly board would recomment 1/80th to 1/100th, they mostly use a 4 or 5 weight fly rod.

Alright, thanks for the info. I also use a 5 wt so I'll have to get a hold of a few to tie on and see how they fall.

I have 1/80 ounce cast on #10 Black Platinum Eagle Claws that are a nice fly jig. Let me know if you'd like to try a few.

I really like the look of that one, I just haven't gotten around to trying it out. I would really hate to lose a fly that looked that good in a tree or some brush haha

Davie makes it look easy I know - but he makes a great follow along video.  You should see some of his salmon flies!!!

His videos are really good. I've seen a good number of them since I've started tying flies

This cricket pattern (using black foam) reminds me of a dragonfly pattern I made while fishing bass in Denny's country.  My flies never looked half as good as these crickets, but bass are only half as smart as trout, which made this the most productive bite going when the 'flies were mating.  Lots of fun throwing to an open pocket and having it get eaten when nothing else was producing.
