Just got my mold yesterday and have a few questions.
1. Are you supposed to crimp the weed guard to the hook
2. Once the they are poured what would cause the lead to come loose
-
There's no need to "crimp" it to the hook but I usually do loop it over the hook shank. Even if you don't I really don't think it's going to go anywhere.
Extremely soft lead can become a little loose on a collarless jig like the Wacky Jig especially if it's taken from the mold when still hot or pried from the mold by the hook. Use a pliers to gently remove a cooled jig by the sprue. That usually helps. If not it might be one of the only times they'll tell you to add a little hard lead to your mix.

I do have to add some hard lead when I cast these too. Same when I pour any jig without a collar. When you paint them it gets solid though.

Thanks ;D

I should say that unless you are going to pour a thousand of these I would not taint your good soft lead to only pour few dozen. Like Jerry said remove at the sprue and let it cool.

How are you removing the heads from the sprues? If you wiggle the sprues back and forth to snap the sprues off without supporting the heads you'll loosen the heads on the hook.
Here's a 1/32 head in a bead pliers.

This pliers works on heads as large as the new 3/32 and down to as small as 1/100. I don't have to exert much of any pressure to hold the heads and get very, very little marring if any. By holding the head in the pliers, I can snap the sprues with the head firmly supported while doing so and I do not have any loose head issues. Before I began using this pliers I had loose heads often. I use only pure, soft lead. While you cannot see it, this head also has the wire keeper.
I found this pliers at a JoAnns Fabric store but I have seen the same in Michaels and Hobby Lobby stores as well as in Walmart. This $10.00 pliers may well be the best sawbuck I ever spent. I've had the pliers for over ten years and they are hardly broke in yet.

That's a slick pair of pliers you got there. I guess I've done so many that I can usually do it free hand without issue. For the itty bitty micro jigs though, that'd be the ticket! Thanks for sharing that.

I powder paint them and that will fix the problem, however if you don't want to paint them then mix up some 2 part epoxy and apply some to the bottom of the head with a toothpick and let it set up.
