Just want to know if it will mess up the color of my baits
-
It will make your baits opaque and you'll have to use more colorant to achieve a color close to the original. The opaqueness of the baits will depend on the amount of hd added.
-
The additive is gray....Just like any additive...it will alter the color of your baits...especially if you don't adjust the amount of colorant. It's great for dark colored baits where you can adjust with more colorant.
-
Thanks i think im going to go with powder salt its really fine and talked with a friend its what he uses and shouldn't really effect my colors but idk about super clear ones
-
Try the HD sinking additive...it makes the bait a lot tougher....easier to use...doesn't rust hooks...
-
HD is the way to go for sure
-
It does change up your color but that same color can still be achieved for sure. Colors are generally really easy to match with HDA but glitter is harder to make as pronounced. That being said I don't even have salt in my lure making room. HDA all the way

Listen to Andrew. He's the Do-It in-house HD guru.
-
Can't speak for the HD additive but salt will also make your baits opaque depending on how much you use.
-
Welcome to the Do-It forums AJ.
-
Just Jay, but thank you ctom. I look forward to getting much farther into this hobby/way of life.
-
Trust me, its not a way of life but it is insanity of the nature that keeps growing, and growing, and gro.....
Anyways, welcome!

Welcome to both AJay and Fonte!

Thanks guys yeah salt takes the pop out of the colors I don't know what to go with lol i like to make clear colors and im trying to perfect a real gill color which i think im close just have to get the stuff to make my senkos sink made aton that float so have to remelt them
-
I use HDA and make a sort of gill color that does really well for me mid summer. I use 20mL of HDA per 4oz and it is just about perfect for me.

I'd give you the recipe for this but I can't find my recipe book to save my life... let me know if you're interested and I'll try to figure it out asap.
-
Oh trust me ctom the addiction is already there but thanks for the welcome guys! And Jeremiah I know I would personally love to know the recipe if you can manage to find it! Looks like it would be killer around here.
-
Found where I posted it previously. I must've never even written down the green recipe I used lol. Here is what I've got.
Bottom is watermelon green with medium orange and green glitter with regular pearl (don't remember recipe)
and top is: 4oz plastic
20 ml HDA
12 drops bears navy blue
5 drops pumpkinseed x2
10 drops purple x2
Around 10 match heads of gold hi lite
Large and medium green glitter to taste

Does the hda my the bait harder or will it still be soft
-
It makes it slightly softer and much more durable than salt.
-Jeremiah Bullfrog lures
-
Ok and can i add it to plastic i remelt and can i still make clear colors with it
-
IT WILL NOT MAKE A CLEAR BAIT AND I THINK YOU CAN ADD TO REMELTS
-
I COULD BE WRONG ABOUT ADDING TO REMELTS BUT I DONT SEE WHY NOT
-
You can remelt it (make sure you keep you melted plastic well stirred and the HD in suspension)...but you will not be able to make clear baits.
The additive is gray (or grey depending on where you live in the world!) and does affect the colors. If you are shooting a dark color you can just add more colorant.

I nominate Andy Lamberson for the Best Forum Signature ever to exist.

yup can't get better than that

bkj do you get into a lot of smallie down LA...

Is anyone getting the same sink rate and "wiggle" as the original GY senko by using HD?
Back when I did stick baits, I used clear flakes (glitter) in my baits with micro salt. Barely changed the color formula at all and you could get close to a clear bait.

Bill did a post well over a year ago where he did some testing and found that 2 tablespoons in 4 oz had the same sink rate as the Senko. That's the amount I use in my sticks.
I don't see much of a difference in "wiggle" on my bass baits when using HD vs. not.....but it sure does make them tougher!

Jim
I have gotten mine almost exactly at one point but now I decided why do what everyone else is doing when I can suit the sink rate for my type of fishing

jmatheny9 is right about making them do what you want,i fish a river a lot and I make my sticks heavier for the currents, I also use regular salt to get a more transparent bait and I haven't had any issue's yet plus the salt is cheaper.... but that's what works for me...
-
What kind of salt do you use

JUST REGULAR TABLE SALT,I ALSO HAVE THE POWDERED SALT AS WELL BUT FIND WHEN YOU USE A LOT LIKE I DO IT MAKES THE BAIT A MORE SOLID COLOR WHEN I DON'T WANT THAT,I PERSONALLY HAVEN'T HAD ANY DURABILITY ISSUE'S USING SALT AND THE HDA DOES MAKE A MORE DURABLE BAIT BUT YOU JUST CANT GET A CLEAR SORE TRANSLUCENT COLORED BAIT USING IT .
-
Yah i have the money to order just don't know what to go with my buddy uses flour salt and his baits are Awsome
-
Just try out the HDA and you will like it. Or just order both if you're on the edge! You'll see

The other 0.02 I will add is the reason I stopped making stick baits, even for myself, was that the salt deal was a PITA. Keeping salt suspended perfectly, even with a pot and stirring system was truely a hassle.
If you were selling the baits and did not test each one, you would find out quick that a customer that got the end of the run or even the beginning of a run, would have inferior baits due to salt content.
HD additive would be my go to now and I am going to pick some up and break out my stick molds to put a supply up for spring fishing.
Plus salt will get moisture in it and if you hate bubbles, you will need another blood pressure pill or 2! ;D

This made me laugh. :)

Here's Bill's post awhile back on the subject:
HD Sinking additive test

So I got my order of the sinking additive. These are my non-biased personal results.
I used medium plastic (not CCM brand)
I use a Del's 5.25 stick mold (identical to a real Senko)
This is my normal Senko recipe I use which is very close to the real deal in weight, sink rate, softness, and a little better durability. Baits turn white opaque from the salt. If I use pickling salt the baits are more clear and colors and glitter look better, but durability suffers.
4 oz plastic
2 heaping tablespoon powdered salt
1 tablespoon softener
----------------------------------------------------------------
Using the HD sinking additive I used....
4 oz plastic
2 level tablespoon sinking additive.
Baits are fairly cloudy and opaque. Baits are Very soft. Baits are very durable (even more durable than medium plastic with no additives). Weight and sink rate are same as the real Senko.
------------------------------------------------------------------
I went to the Pharmacist and he weighed a few baits for me
Real Senko 10.86g
Pickling salt 11.51g
powdered salt 10.80g
HDS 11.15g
In conclusion I am very happy with the results. For my personal baits the price is not a big deal. For resale adding $.50-$1.00 to a pack should cover it. I fished a couple hours today and caught 5 fish. I use an o-ring and bait looked fine and can still catch numerous more fish. Sink rate was right on and the wiggle looked awesome

So is he saying in that post hda is better could not figure that out lol i think im just going to go with the hda how much would i ad to 8 oz cause that's what o normally work with

I went to a farm supply store and got to big syringes that they use for livestock. (No needles)
It is marked mL on the sides and I use 20mL per 4oz so you would need about 40mL. Just make sure you stir the HDA up before sucking it in the syringe
