Title: Black pearl
Post by: Carl on 01/10/15 22:39 UTC
Does anyone make this?  Looking for that very light darkness.  Almost like a fade.

I don't make a straight Black Pearl but I have made "Hot Pistol", a Smoke with some Lumina Black (pearl powder).

Do you have a pic. Want to see what black pearl looks like.

Found your old post with Hot Pistol but picture did not show up. I looked in photos and it's not there either or I missed it.

Just went back to it, also.  Pic doesn't show.  No telling.  I saw that pic a little while back on Google.  I don't have those pics anymore.

A lot of old posts with links to pics still have the old forum address.  If that's the case changing the address from caneycreekmolds.net to custombaits.com works in most cases if the pic is still hosted in the gallery here.

Awesome. That's what I'm looking for to make the top of my swim baits a little dark. Also the cross cut tail would be a strong candidate for this also. Where did you get the black pearl?

Just add a few drops of black then pearl powder to taste. Seems easier to tweak and make yours unique that way

I was going to say about the same thing J. Make a medium smoke and pearl it a little at a time until you get what you want, just don't add any flake until you have the pearl where you want it. Adding flake when attempting to achieve a particular color is nothing but a distraction unless the flake goes in last. The flake in BKJ smoke in the picture looks to be .040.

And Gary, this is a beautiful smoke! Good job on it.

Nice smoke color indeed.  I make a smoke w/ holo red string glitter that looks pretty nice.  I should really make some tubes and rtw in that color.  Smoke w/ about any glitter looks damn nice, addition of pearl or hilite is amazing as well. I was excited to get black in a pearled set thinking it would be a black pearl, but no such luck.  Flat graphite black.  Nice color anyway though!

Being that I can't do a two color without a twin injector on the 3.75 smoking shad, I was thinking about rubbing in a little black pearl on top and fade it in.  Then hit it with with a heat gun. Even if I did have a twin I just want the very top in smoke with most of the body in blue pearl.  At least that's what I'm thinking.

If the Smokin' Shad is oriented top/bottom in the mold...if You can shoot just the back by using a laminate plate, You can twinject the back-half of the mold as Smoke and Blue Pearl, then shoot the belly-half of the mold straight Blue Pearl.

Or vice-versa, if You shoot the belly half with the laminate plate, twinject the top/back- half.  Or hand-pour the belly then twinject the top.

I have the 3.75 smoking shad. If you don't have a twin injector just shoot the bait in the black first. Then cut the top of the bait off and stick it back in the mold and shoot the bottom half. Just make sure you shoot slow or the new plastic will try flow over the top half.

BKJ this style mold won't work with a lam. I have tried the cutting and I just plain out suck at it. They look like snaggle tooth took a bite out of them. Maybe a longer pair of scissors so I get it in one cut? Hmmm. Maybe.

Carl, if you are shooting baits for your own use, why give it another thought? Go ahead and cut to make the 2 color numbers. If that's how the mold has to be handled without a twin injector or blending block you won't ever get any better by avoiding doing it and the fish will certainly not give a rip how the baits look.

Razor blade or exacto knife works for me. Lure craft sells a razor blade tail splitter for 30. I use that often as well. Plus it helps with re melts.

A Lam plate on this mold is the wrong way. It would give you a vertical and not a horizontal. I like making this bait with a small amount on the top being black and then taking my twin injector and making a light yellow stripe with a pearl belly. The only way I can do that is to inject the black cut off the top and then twin inject the bottom. I use scissors and they work fine. It's a thin bait and they cut it with ease.

I think I found my solution to the darker top of my smoking shads. I remember reading a post on how someone was using eye shadow as highlights. Being that I love all my smoking shads in pearl colors, I shot some in pearl green.  Then I rubbbed my finger in the darker green eye shadow and rubbed it in on the top knit line an faded it slightly down the side all along the top of the bait. Hit it with a heat gun and WHAM!  Almost looks like I airbrushed it in. Two pairs of scissors later and I had it in my finger the whole time.  Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

I use the heat gun for putting glitter on the backs of my bigger, bolder colored wutz-its (for muskies).
