Title: Here we go!
Post by: hardwoodcd on 01/27/15 09:42 UTC
Got my Do-It starter kit today! Time to start cooking! I'm sure I'll have questions as I get into it.  I'll keep you all informed.
Thanks, Casey

Welcome and good luck!

Always wear gloves and a respirator ...and get a good digital thermometer!  ;D

And here's the answers to you first 5 questions! :o
1. Why are my baits sticky and/or Cloudy? Temperature ...you must get the plastic to 350F to fully change state. Make sure you stir it!
2. Why did my plastic turn yellow?  Temperature....you got it too hot.
3. Why are my baits not filling all the way? Temperature...you need hot plastic to flow well into the little cavities without setting up prematurely and blocking the fill.
4. Why are my baits denting: Temperature...your plastic is too hot for a big bodied bait and it's sucking in the skin that has already set and is the weakest area.

As a general rule: Heat your plastic to 350- and pour at 350 to 320.

5. Why are my baits to soft...sticky....bubbles ..? Make sure you mix your plastic WELL...EVERY time you use it.

Have fun!

Andy

Happy pouring, Casey.  Reread Andy's post.  It has a lot of good info.

I'm disappointed in Andy. Not once did he talk about a thermometer.

I'll tell you what.  I've been using an IR thermometer for a long time and I thought I was getting accurate readings.  I bought a digital thermometer at one of the fancy dancy kitchen stores and tried using it for plastics and I HATED it...it took 45-60 seconds for it to register the high temp.  I ended up tossing it and went back to the IR.  In a moment of weakness I bought one of Do-It's digitals.  This thing is great...accurate temps in less than 10 seconds.  It's even cheaper than an IR.  And if that's not enough, it's even endorsed by Andy.

I added a bit to your post Justin.  For clarification, I hope you don't mind.   :)

I made about 10 baits yesterday that were worth keeping.  I do have some questions already, but Andy answered most of them so far! Thanks guys! I'll be checking back in with some pics. I already want to order about a dozen more colors and glitters!
