Gorgeous lure. Detailed painting has never been a skill of mine, although I wish it was. If the picture doesn't do it justice then this should be on display in a museum. Looks great.

TUNED IN !! 8)
Those look very good, nice work.
-
A few more of those and a few pounds of Red Potatoes, and we got a Fish Fry! Gaaw'LEE!
-
Those are crazy good.
-
Awesome if that don't get your fire going your woods wet!
-
To me, Success is not catching fish on them.... It's finally getting the results you have been striving for in making a bait... ;D
Thanks everybody.
Mike

I'm trying to be the best on the planet.... 8) I'm looking for someone that does a better one so I can set my goals higher...
Anybody see any better than mine yet? I would love to see some pics to make me try harder... :P
I have lure making OCD.. :P

VERY NICE
-
Very nice...I'm just starting ...this weekend! I'll be happy with a decent two color bait!
Go to some taxidermy shows or the taxidermy exhibits/competitions at outdoor shows. Amazing talent there! Same thing as your lures...just on a bigger scale! (pun intended).
-
It's a great bait, love the placement.
Try one with only paint and no decal similar to this:

Not to give anyone a hard time but I think drew set the goal to high so I will set this one more achievable. I love the bait awesome looking but in order to be the best bait maker you gotta use paint. You got the print and stick down now practice 100% paint. I think you will evolve as a lure maker better once you master an art that can be applied on anything.
I challenge you if you wanna be the best to start from scratch hand carve, paint and catch then and only then will some body reach the master lure "making " level again you have the printer figured out and it looks amazing but once the pattern is on the shelf in bottles of paint and it up to you to make it happen then get back with us.
I have a long way on my master lure making journey but I have taken the first step of the million mile journey

I do paint a fine gill... But more important to me is they look as real as possible. Paint cant do what I want.... Especially if I want to make 50 or 100 of them looking the same. I'm not comparing painting talents, I want to compare the most "real looking".
These are some I painted last week, but not clear coated yet.

If the most realistic is what your after the print and play is the only way to go! You make some extremely realistic print jobs. Computers can give you what man never can reach and that's perfection and repeatable products. One day my paint will be that good but My eyes will not be good enough to see how to tie it on and I'll be to old to care lol

I cant take full credit.. My friend is a professional photo restoration guy with $2000.00 programs to manipulate photos. He's also a fisherman. ;D This helps a lot. My technique is not the same as any others. So a lot of time has gone into the computer art work. This has taken a couple years to perfect. I told him he could start a biz making many patterns in shapes and colors that would sell for good money. He's not interested.
I'm still looking for some that look better... I want someone to raise the bar. :D
-
If the most realistic is what your after
Isnt that really the goal for anyone? Nobody tries to make a frog bait look like a duck. ;D
-
I would fish a small duck
-
Me too. In fact I might make some ;D
-
I'm with fishing a duck too. Maybe it's me but taking a computer image is not what I'm into doing on this forum. I'm into making baits the old fashion way. Lots or trial and era and hard work. I'm just all in on a custom made bait that I can catch a fish on. Using a computer image to me takes out the custom part. Just my opinion.
-
I have been making custom baits for 32 years... I like to change it up and making something more real looking once in a while. Don't knock me for that. I have 32 years under my belt.
I'm still waiting for a more real looking lure that someone made... :-*
-
Lol. Careful who you blow kisses to.
-
Being brand new to painting my own baits...I think both have their place and I appreciate the skill and knowledge it takes to do both!
I'm taking on learning how to airbrush now...but I'm sure I'll give a try to the computer printed types we've seen here.
It's all amazing to me!

Very Nice!! I'll never be able to paint that good, but I'll keep trying. ;D
-
This is why I love this forum. Such an overwhelmingly large amount of talent here but yet the great people on here make it inspiring, not intimidating. This post makes me want to get into hard baits which is something I never thought I would have the confidence to try.

Nothing wrong with those Justin. 8)

Totally yet respectfully disagree 110% if one bass eats a blue gill out of a school of gill. Let's say 10 or 15 gills in the bunch why would he eat yours if it is a 100% match? The odds are not in your favor.
Yet if yours is 75% realistic with something that catches the bass's eye he will target your bait Out of the 10 or 15 that look alike. It's basic prey vs predator instinct. To each the own that's what makes the world go round.
-
Thanks guys. Hard baits maybe more addictive then anything else.

Nothing in nature is perfect and it seems those that are less than perfect become the dinner for many fish. Ice fish one winter day we had fish staring at crappie minnows hung in front of the fish's nose but no takers. One of us decided to slice off the bulk of a minnows tail membranes and put it back down. The results was instant. The camera showed the minnows with the full tail were far more active than the fish were willing to chase, but with the tail all but gone they'd try to fly but didn't get far. We also tried clipping the fins on one side of the minnow with a nail clipper and that was equally effective.

I guess it's a good thing my bluegills don't swim exactly like a real bluegill, And real bluegills don't have hooks and split rings. ;D Mine will stand out just fine. ;D I raised largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, and pike in many huge aquariums for years. Studying their eating habits and actions. Bass actually ate the wounded goldfish last... Not first like most think. When the food was dumped in, they devoured any until they were stuffed.... Then as they ate, the wounded were the last left in the tank.

In fact... A bass has a brain the size of a pea.. Please don't think they are too smart. It's simple just to catch them on a stupid shoelace. :P

Do you remember the baby nipple and cane pole rig that was somewhat of a craze for them years ago?

I'll buy some store bought stuff occasionally so I can unabashedly copy it's color. I'll only buy it when I can't steal it from my fishing buddy when he's not looking.

I went to the Milwaukee musky expo and lurepartsonline had a booth with the winners of their homemade lure contest. I believe they also have them featured on their website. That would be a good source to compare. I would hate to be the judge of that contest.
