Title: First Timer
Post by: joshuajones57 on 02/09/15 17:20 UTC
Hey guys this will be my first time attempting to make my own lures, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for different colors from what I've purchased. Flor. Pink, White, Chartreuse, and sweet potato. I also ordered the pearl powder as well as the hyper hi-lites 6 pack. Does anyone have any color recipes they wouldn't mind sharing with me. Thanks in advance.

Well I guess it would be a help if we knew what baits you were making and what you were fishing for. My guess is your not bass fishing or you would have ordered 2X in CC Green.

Welcome aboard Josh.

I don't use "recipes" per se, I just shot from the hip and took notes in my learning stages.  Now, my basic pattern is 8 drops of X2 per 8oz of plastic and 1/8 tsp of hi-lite or glitter per 8oz of plastic.  I might go lighter on the colorant if I want the glitter to show more, and I sometimes mix colorants (using 4 of this, 2 of that, and 2 of another) with 8 total drops are in the mix.  Keep some notes as you are starting out and pretty soon it will be second nature.

NOTE: If you are going to sell your baits, I would recommend following specific recipes for quality control... (but I don't expect that based on the list you gave.)

Also, I don't throw anything away unless it is seriously burnt; some of my most fish catching colors I'll never be able to duplicate because they were re-melts of multiple batches and scraps.

Oooooo sweet potato, my favorite lol. I'd get some brown so you can make orange bellies and shoot brown backs. I'm not near my recipe book or I'd shoot you a few. I'd just type in your colors in the search bar, I'm sure you'll find some good ones! Welcome aboard though!

Welcome aboard Josh. What you have ordered is a great start. Don't let Lamar fool ya, he gets his green from between his toes. If I was to recommend any one color in addition to what you have ordered it would be Florida Grape. The purple will team up great with a chartreuse tail or a hot pink tail.

Thanks guys, and Lamar I ordered the 5" Carrot mold bc living in Florida I do a little more saltwater fishing than freshwater fishing. (I know I know there's a saltwater section on this forum but I really appreciate the suggestions.) Also all of the colors I ordered were the X2.

Since you are chasing snook, reds and the occasional trout I would suggest the following that I make which are generally 8oz batches:

Pearl white- 4-5 drops of white and a 1/8 tsp of peal powder

Chart- 14-16 drops of chart

Floro pink- same as the chart. Makes a real heavy deep pink.

Pearl body and tails of both colors.

Also do a pink body with .040 silver halo with a chart tail.

Baffin magic- 6-8 drops of pink with .015 silver and red flake. Killer color and everything. Caught a ton of reds and a few snook last time I was over there

Also a color I have been playing with and having success with is called Cajun pepper.

Chart tail with a clear body that has black, silver and red flake.

Can do the same for salt n pepper minus the red.

I was down to Marco Island a couple of weeks ago and saw a few boats out fishing on flats. They were also fishing what looked like tree roots going down into the water. They had power poles and all. It didn't look much different then bass fishing. I had the itch to join them.

They were in the Mangrove trees.  Snook and Mangrove Snapper hang out in there and put up a monster fight.  Snook is basically a giant saltwater bass in my opinion, but pretty much all fish in Florida are in those roots.

Here is what they look like. (that is from google)

My first time fishing for Snook, me and 2 friends went out with a guide and he brought 24 dozen pinfish as our bait.  Caught a snook or mangrove snapper on almost every darn one of those things. All of our snook were released as they have a really short season and a small slot, like 32-36" or something like that and all of ours we around 20-22" class. We had to throw the snook back towards the roots because a pod of dolphins were behind the boat and would wait for us to throw it back and shoot towards those things like a bullet. Truly it was a bad ass experience

That sounds awesome slow burn, yea that is exactly what I was thinking when I got the white with the pearl powder and the brighter colors. As far as the glitter goes I got the gunmetal and halo purple. I was unsure of what size to get .40 or .15 so I got one of each.

As to glitter size its really a personal preference. Some guys size it to the bait as in smaller bait smaller flake size but the beauty of this hobby is you can do what you want and make color combos that feel right to you. I am curious on the sweet potato color though? I know the freshwater guys like it, but i cant say i have ever seen that color for a saltwater bait. But i could see a laminate with a potato back with black and silver flake and a pearl belly to be a natural bait fish type color

The clear with silver red and black is known as shrimp creole around these parts.  Great bait but I just have trouble believing that it looks just like a brown shrimp color under water.

True but it's like a pink trick worm. Not sure what that looks like but guys catch fish on it. Sometimes that's the trick. I have a hard time fishing that kind of stuff too unless my partner is out fishing me. Then it's give me one of those.
