Went to the store yesterday to buy a few swing jigs and of course same old same old they sold out and didn't restock. The main reason I started making my own baits to begin with. This year the swing jig has caught me some nice fish and I'm going to order the mold. Then I'll have them when I want them. My question is what size/type hooks do you guys use ?

I don't have the mold Lamar as I have been using the hard head with a lot of success but there are only 2 bodies of water I fish that have the right bottom for it so I don't feel the need to make them....Yet. That said, it depends on what you like to fish behind the head, for me, on the Biffle Hard Head , I use the Biffle bug a good bit but I really like using a sweet beaver, but the hook is an EWG Owner so it has enough bite for thicker creature type baits. I don't use worms or grubs because the hook it too much for those types of baits and that said, the Owner J Hooks that come on the Biffle Hard head are what I would use if I made my own, it is an EWG style but the bend isn't radical so you can use some smaller creature baits. I also like the Mustad EWG style but that is my preference due to the creature baits I like using on the rig.

I use mainly 3/0 Mustads. I'll be pouring some this weekend actually.

The mold is very hook friendly. I think you could use just about any size you wanted.

I like the KVD Grip Pin Hook and I use mostly 3/0 and 4/0's.

Thanks. I've been using beaver style baits. I'm liking your idea there Andy. That hook would keep the bait from balling up on you on the hook set.

just about any hook you want to try. If you opt for using the split ring (some do not like this option) you can use the hooks with horizontal eyes.

Got my mold and love it. So easy to make. I decided to go with the Gamakatsu 3/0 heavy wire worm hooks. This hook has a super wide gap and will help the bait from balling up on the hook set. I figured my cost each at .90 cents. With a much better hook. Tackle Warehouse gets $4.99 and $5.99 for two. I think over time I made a good investment.

That is one mold that will definitely pay for itself in one season, well for me at least. Big crags and boulders still rob me of a few here and there.

This bait doesn't work well in weeds or flat nothing bottoms. It does best on rocky hard bottoms. That means your going to pay if you want to play. But it has paid off for me this year. I've caught some really nice fish on it.
