I got a call Tuesday night from my buddy Jon at 10pm and all he said before hanging up was "its on, going down in the morning". I knew exactly meant. He was saying that the surf is going to be flat and wanted me to join him. I woke up Wed morning to at 4am to make the trek down to Surfside Texas, which is a small beach town just west of Galveston. We were in the water at 6am with our topwaters tied on and proceeded to go to work. The first hour or so was slow but we managed to stick 6 and put the on the stringer. At about 8am the trout woke up and decided it was time to feed. The next 90 minutes were action packed topwater action like I have never seen. Easily now the best topwater fishing I have been a part of. Since the surf was flat we could see the fish chasing our lures. They a were angry and hitting them like a freight train. If they did manage to miss they were knocking the bait out of the water 2-3 feet in the air. Color didn't matter, all they wanted was the action. We were some 30 yards away from guys with live bait, who caught a couple, but for that 90 minutes the 3 of us caught well over 50 trout. You couldn't go more than 3 casts with hooking one up. And when you didn't it look like depth charges going off out there with how the water was boiling and the spooks flying out of the water. The best part was my buddy Jon, brought a friend he played baseball with in college and it was his first surf trip and primarily a bass guy. Absolutely blew his mind. Bar none, this was a top 2 trip. Only one I can think off hand that was better was snook fishing in Sanibel, FL ( which I have 2 trips scheduled next week ;)) Anyways, we kept our 30 trout (10 per man limit) and released the rest. Were out of the water and headed back to the office at 10:00. It has been 11 years since I had a surf trip like this, and on that one it was all plastics. Just something about topwater fishing that get the mojo flowing.

Now thats a stringer of fish!

Stringer? More like a meat rope! You'll remember that action and tell this story for years. I haven't fished saltwater in over ten years and am yearning once again!
