3 shorts and one keeper this morning waiting for the night bite now. This sure has been the warmest one I've seen.

Nice fish Mike.
We're setting records here right now with the winter weather we've seen thus far. As in no winter weather. I'm liking it. We tries the walleyes on Friday after the crappies crapped out on us but there was too much wind in the wrong direction for the walleye casting. I'm heading to Red Wing one day next week.

Tom I just hope that the winter wheat the farmer's have isn't affected by the open winter. Have a great time in Red Wing.

Winter wheat.....I saw a field of it yesterday that appeared to still be growing. We don't see tons of winter wheat raised around here....maybe that's a wise decision on the part of the area farmers. I also saw farmers out digging and disking yesterday too. Today we are wet. Real wet. And going to get much wetter.

Wacker, is that a river your fishing? Our walleye fishing here in Indiana is very limited. Wish I had some public spots to fish down here. Oh well, june will be here before long. Hopr to go to Cass lake this june!

Right on WW ! Wisconsin River at PDS ?
I've been out every day this week with varying degrees of success on the keeper front. Yesterday I lost the three decent fish I had on. Those three and others came off as I was reeling them in. The hooks are razor sharp and I have no clue what the problem was. Still, I'm happy as a clam to have been able to get out. Looks like we will have a few more days to get out yet before winter shows up. Just hope we don't get too much rain = 2+" in the forecast. 62 degrees here today. Crazy weather.

Awesome bite last nite. 19 caught 2 were 17 and 1 was 28 wow , and no Camera with. Out of 13 that I have cleaned this week 9 of them were barren females. Has anyone else seen this?

Nice fish! I'm loving this December walleye bite thus year.

Caught 7 more from 4 pm until 6 pm all short. The man upstairs sure gave me a great day even though it rained all day on and of the flow speed was just under 13000cfs.

In past years it wasn,t unusual to catch a walleye without eggs or milt in maybe 1 out of 10 to 15 fish. I always assumed it was a barren female. Maybe I was wrong it could be a sterile male. I tried to get answers on the web , but all I got was mumbo jumbo. It was said they could get too old to spawn , but these fish are between 15 and 20 inches . plenty old and big enough. Anyway out of the last 13 2 were females with eggs and 2 were males with milt and 9 had neither. All they had were long thin empty tubes. They were fat healthy looking fish as if they were eating to develop eggs.
Nothing unusual about this year except the warm fall and the abundance of dinks 2 ppl in a boat using minnows can easily catch 50 to 75 eyes in an outing. Maybe 1 or 2 keepers maybe none. Do any of the walleye folks know what's up? Thanks.

I don't know where you are at but its way to early yet for our fish to have much of any spawn other than the simple skeins inside. Nothing is near to maturity and won't be until we get closer to the end of February and water temps begin to rise. Spawn will start to develop some in another month but we're a long way away from thinking the fish are sterile. As for the males, they won't be shedding any milt for a long time yet.

All the walleyes/saugers I have cleaned this fall have been males ( I don't knowingly keep female walleyes) and they have all had milt in them. I have caught fish with neither eggs or milt in them this time of year in the past but not many.

I fish the wi. River flowages in n. central wi. The walleye here start spawning around the end of march and they have been for the last 50 years. The eggs and milt are over 50 percent developed. I only keep a few fish between 15 and 17 and 1/2 inches. If I catch a fish that I think is a female she goes back. They are starting to show now so its easier
To know yeah I've heard the jokes about how to tell. If she has her mouth open. Or buy her 3 drinks and she will follow you home etc. As I said 1 out of 15 is normal but 9 of 13 is not. By god I need to learn to post pics or just shut up.

The milt producing glands in walleyes and sauger will be visible all year, but not swollen and leaking milt. And 2XL has brought up a good point. Fall/early winter run fish are generally the males. A few hens will get in there but most females will hang back until mid-winter before doing any major shift towards a dam. We don't start seeing any of the large hens until February on the big river except for any hens that were what you'd call resident fish.

Like Tom said, the milt is still solid this time of year and will be until the spawn starts.
I think the biggest reason most guys get into mostly males/smaller sized fish this time of year is because the bigger females and males don't inhabit the same areas most of the year. At least around here it seems that way. I think too many guys are happy hitting the same community spots everyone else does catching smaller fish hoping bigger fish will move in in time. That may work come the spring run (it's a low percentage tactic IMO) but I think a guy is better off getting out of his comfort zone and doing a little exploring for bigger fish VS sitting and hoping to luck into them. Don't get me wrong, catching a lot of fish is fun but IMO you need to change things up a bit ( location ) if you want a crack at bigger fish. None of the fish I have caught the last couple weeks have come from the classic community spots = deeper holes. All of them were caught in spots that others wouldn't even consider fishing because they would rather fish memories vs changing things up by exploring new water. Fine with me. Happy boating ! LOL
