Title: Salt and Silica/sand
Post by: Dextraction on 01/15/16 09:56 UTC
So I have been researching different weighting options and I see threads on HDS, flour salt, etc...but my question is has anyone tried using Aquarium Sea Salt mixed in with their plastics?  Such as Instant Ocean?

The other question I have is regarding silica or fine quartz sand (mixed with salt)?  Worth trying, or does it make a mess of bait and/or pouring gear?

First, welcome to the Do-It boards.

As to what you put in your plastic, pretty much anything that has zero water can be added but consider how abrasive whatever you put in the plastic might be on the O-rings and cylinder walls and plunger in the injector. Most of what is sold as weighting components at the sites where plastic is sold is developed for plastic use. Anything after market and you're on your own.

Thanks ctom.  I will do some experimenting.

I have used a 50/50 mixture of silica sand and salt and it works quite well. But like Tom said, the sand is a bit abrasive. So is salt for that matter. But they do work. I believe but I'm not 100 percent sure that Yamamoto uses a salt/sand mixture in their Senkos now.

You would be correct.

We use glass beads (round) and not regular blasting media (irregular). No need for salt when using this.

I picked up some white and black in this stuff yesterday and tried some hand pours with it last night.  All looks great, but I will have to see out the fishies like it.

Really like this idea! Has to be easier to deal with than salt and shouldn't shade your colorant like sinking additive. I'm going to give it a go. Thanks for this tip.

So do you use the same amount when mixing ? 2 TBL spoons to 4oz plastic

How is the durability of the baits?

Way more durable than salt would ever be.

Tried Aquarium Salt and it was a no go.  Two things happend....it foamed at 350 degrees in the plastic (too many other elements) and then the unused salt in the container collected air moisture clumped up like cat litter.    But it was fun experimenting with it.  LOL

I did order HDS, but half the fun is to see what else is possible.

I bought some of the glass beads and it did work well for the clear baits. I didn't do it in soft. Sorry but I personally think that's all in your guys head the regular worked just fine. I guess we'll have to see how the bait holds up now. With the HD I can fish one bait all day long or longer. But it does cloud the bait if your wanting a more clear bait. Time will tell.

I ordered the same. now if I can get on my feet with this thrown out back of mine I can get to pouring again. someone did comment that they will still last better than with a salted bait.
