Title: Underspin
Post by: Mike J on 03/04/16 19:30 UTC
Just an idea I had.  I'm not real fond of the big lead keeper on the hearing head underspin. I'm planning to use it for smaller plastic than what it is designed for.  I'm most likely going to modify it for a wire keeper.  The idea I have is to combine the underspin wire form and the wire keeper form so you only have 1 wire to put in and depending on how much of the jig collar you delete it would greatly increase stability of the wire keeper.  What thoughts do you guys have about this?

Rather nifty idea and some nice handy work.

I don't make or fish underspins but this is forward thinking.

So what are you fishing for with lighter plastics and heads ?

Thanks guys. Lamar Walleyes and smallmouth mostly and the 1/8 oz has a #2 hook so I can fish crappie plastics on it, perch also seem to like them. With a 3.5" swim shad the lead keeper is just a little bigger than ide like. I'm assuming these are designed for bigger baits than that anyway I could be wrong though.

I love the idea and the innovation but if you want to fish for panfish along with walleye and smallmouth and use smaller baits, why not get the horse head or pony head mold? Use the blade you want and then you have a naturally smaller profile. Underspins or fish head spins can be used a few different ways but most of my success has been slow rolling it in 5' to 9' of water that is in the mid 50s water temp, it seems as if it goes beyond 60 or below 50 that it becomes less effective.

Mike

Great idea - but how much more cost do you incur with a change in the single wire form??  and if you're making your own it ups the cost per jig and then you have to worry that the wires you make consistently fit in the mold??  OR are you going to have someone make them for you like Mustang wire?? custom work requires I believe a 10K initial order.

Just a few things to consider!

I just make them for myself. I like the way the herring head looks better than the pony head jigs and an 1/8 oz in either mold is about the same size profile. I like the way the herring head has a flat back to it so the plastic fits up to it a little better. For what I'm going to make yes I'm just going to make my own wires I used .31 wire, and at $10.35 for 95 feet  I'm not to worried about the cost. I used about 2" of wire per form so I can make 570 forms. It wasn't to hard to make them.  If I was making them to sell I most likely wouldn't do this but it's just for myself and my style of fishing.

I tried 1 yesterday with a 3.5" swim shad and have 2 walleyes in the fridge for supper that liked them, so I'm happy with the underspin so far ;D. Ya they probably would have eaten a regular jig just fine haha, but some times I just like to use something different.

Personally I'm all for anything that gives a theoretical increase in durability.
I do something similar with my underspins, reckon it's easier to twist the wire later to simplify pre-casting.

Nice work Mooki. Those are some good looking baits. I see you used high temp silicone to fill in the part you didn't want poured. I've read about using it and it seems it would be easier than the JB weld that I normally use. Welcome to the forum!

Red RTV works very well to fill in on molds.

I've got a couple that have had at least 500 pours on them and they are holding up quite well.

Mikej, I like your idea about the wire form, think I'll do the same. With a wire bender, it will make that pretty simple.

Thanx for the welcome!
Just getting started, still trying to get the hang of powder coating, next step will be to add some eyes.
The hi-temp silicone seems to stand up rather well, I've used it in a few other molds as well to make swing jigs and Mörrum-spinners (sort of).
If I desperately feel the need to remove the mods it should be possible (and most likely easier than using JB or similar).

Can you tell me where to purchase the wire from

You can get the stainless wire from Barlows or Netcraft.

Is .31 the diameter or lb.  haven't looked into wire but going to now.  Then wire keepers are pretty proud priced

.31 is diameter. The underspin forms are heavier than that but I find .31 suitable for both.

Ok I was just wanting to modify a mold for a wire keeper

I think you mean .031 and not .31.

.31 wire is pretty heavy stuff.
