Title: PONY HEADS JIGS
Post by: kbbgood on 03/12/16 17:17 UTC
I have always liked to use pony head jigs crappie fishing but to expensive to keep buying. Would like to start building them but the problem is what sized parts do I use. The spinner blade the swivel the ring, all that stuff needs to be the right size and I have no idea what size to get. Is there any help out there for that stuff?

I like a size 0
Or 00
Split ring.  The same goes for blades.  The nice thing about doing your own is you can customize them to what you like.  Size 12 swivel is pretty standard.  I get a lot from Jann's netcraft.

I use #12 and #14 swivels and size 0 split rings. The blades are kinda what ever you like. I like some bigger with a #2 willow and then some smaller blades too.

Great jig for just about anything that swims.  8)  It's what is so awesome about making your own tackle is you can make things to suit your way of fishing.

Look on Barlows website. They have all that info listed for you.

Every once in a while I make the drive to Jann's just so I can see the parts in my hand. Buying online even with charts and pictures doesn't always cut it. Jann's is about three hours round trip for me. So where ever is closest for you take a drive and write it down. Hooks are another big one. They make so many different sizes and shapes it's really hard to figure out what you want.

I agree with what Lamar is saying here. Sometimes those size charts in paper catalogs or on a monitor or phone screen don't reflect the actual size even if they say they do. We have a Cabelas only 38 miles from home and I'll run over there if I want to see something up close and personal before I start buying. I buy little from Cabelas but might actually pick up whatever it is I am looking at as long as I am there, but Cabelas has such limited stock options.

In line with this thread though, I am not a fan of anything on a jig but plastic or hair. The spinner blade swinging under the head is a distraction for me. I can see these pony heads when in a multiple jig rigging of some sort that's being trolled, but under a cork or cast and retrieved for crappies? Not this guy. I have never seen the need  for whatever extra flash the blade may offer.

I have both the pony and horsehead mold.  Will caution on one thing if you go for the 1/32nd and 1/16th combo mold realize you will only be able to pour one side at a time or the mold doesn't close right and it's a PITA to melt the lead off the hook and swivel

1/0 split rings on all of them.  As they are only used for the Blades I get German split rings from Hagens - do not use them on any other lures they're not heavy enough.  Some folks use jump rings but I really don't like them.

Hook sizes 6 to 2 from 1/32nd to 1/16th - I used to make bigger ones back home up to 1/2 oz.  Sickles or regular aberdeen, they both fit.

Crane swivels size 12 up to 1/8th oz. and size 10 for all the larger sizes.  A buddy on another board turned me on to these rolling swivels and they are nice.  A size 8 equals our size 12.  I'll be getting more.

Blades from 00 up to size 2 - making them yourself you can use any type blade you want.  If you ever get a chance to pick up some old blades (Webber, Weller and Marathon blades) get them they do feel different when being retreived.  At Hagens you can buy less than their minimum but make sure to call the order in to make sure you figured it right.

example:  Colorado 2 nickle spinner blades: Catalog cost $17.60 per 1000. The price for 100 would be $1.76 plus $1.00 for being under the 500 minimum. The total cost for 100 colorado #2 nickle spinner blades would be $2.76.

When you start pricing things out make out a sheet and run costs including shipping!  sometimes it's worth it to pay extra for one item to save a separate shipping charge.

I am mainly talking about 1/16 oz. and maybe 1/8 oz. if that will help with sizing.

Only a few changes based on the size's you listed

Non collared you can get a production mold for the 1/16th.  You can get a collar with barb production for 1/8th.  Other wise you'd get an asst size mold and could only pour 1 of each size each pour.

same 1/0 split rings on all of them.  As they are only used for the Blades I get German split rings from Hagens - do not use them on any other lures they're not heavy enough.  Some folks use jump rings but I really don't like them.

Hook sizes 4 to 1 from 1/16th to 1/8th - I used to make bigger ones back home up to 1/2 oz.  Sickles or regular aberdeen, they both fit.

Crane swivels size 12 up to 1/8th oz. and size 10 for all the larger sizes.

Blades from 0 up to size 2 - making them yourself you can use any type blade you want.  If you ever get a chance to pick up some old blades (Webber, Weller and Marathon blades) get them they do feel different when being retreived.

Hope this helps

I got all the parts to build 100 1/8 oz roadrunners and started build the spinner blades and split rings. Got 75 done without stopping and my fingers hurt. Is there any better split ring pliers other then the ones I got? The P-line micro split ring pliers is the ones I got cause they say micro. They are working but there has got to be a better set then these.

Since its hard to buy American made tools I'll tell you this . On Ebay there is a guy that goes by Salhisan or something like that . I buy a lot of stuff like exacto knives , veterinary tools and a little pair of needle nose split ring pliers that have worked great for the price at around 5 bucks . PONY HEADS and under spins are a pain . I'd say pony heads because TJ Stall (from Blakemore) or whatever the peckerwoods name is will be all over you about his hoky configuration trademark .

Just refer to the heads as a "roadrunner-type" or a "roadrunner-style" of head. His crap can't bother you there.

I still like the old cheap Worth but I have a really nice pair of Texas Tackle (thought hey US made until I got them) that work really good.
