Title: Its time to get together!
Post by: ctom on 04/09/16 10:46 UTC
Ok guys, were on the calandar for a Do-It get-together once again.  Since the company is a Monday-Friday business and much of what we get involved in deals with the company directly this event has to be help during the week. For those of you who want to get on board with this hopefully this extra time will help in your planning. Please be mindful that this event does have some limits on how many can attend so if you are really interested, you should contact me so I can get your name on the list. PM contact thru this site is preffered. The dates for this are Thursday January 19 and Friday January 20. A date had to be settled on and this timeframe is well past the holidays yet still at a time when the company doesn't have conflicts.
At the last event the Thursday evening was set aside for a social gathering and light dinner, followed buy more social banter. This is allowed everyone to put a name with a face and we had a great evening. Hopefully we can get accomadations that allow for this again. The Friday was the big day. From the hotel we all caravaned over to the plant where we were treated to OJ, sweet rolls and coffee. During this time we had a more formal introduction to each other and talked about Do-It and their involvement in the mold and tackle industry. Ideas we thrown out and tossed around and discussed. Thoughts on new baits or new jigs came up and today we see several of those available to us. To finish out the morning a full tour of the plant was given and this alone, in my opinion, is well worth the trip on its own. For as many times as I have been thru the Do-It maze I am always amazed at what all they do and how the sandcast molds are made. Right after the tour we descended on the metropolis of Denver Iowa and converged on a nice little saloon that served up the best burger-type meal I have ever eaten. After the eats we returned to the plant and had an afternoon of show and tell and crafting as we each know it in the "studio". State of the art, this is some fancy kind of digs where play time got serious but stayed fun. We also got to see a sneak preview of what was on the plate for the future and were able to work some with the prototypes.  Every one of us has a "special" thing that we do and seeing these ideas first hand, then actually trying those techniques. This sure beats the daisies off from just reading about how these things get done. At the end of this playtime people begin to get on their way for home, good-byes are said and the Do-It plant has a weekend to fall back into a normal routine.
I have often commented that the people here on this website are like a family. After spending time with those who attended the last get together, I am even more convinced of that. That said, I feel like this up-coming event is like a reunion of sorts. I am hopeful that those who were here the last time around are here once again. I am hopeful that we have new faces to put names with.  People considering this event, feel free to bring your wives. I'll say again that space will be limited so if you are game to join in, please do pm me to confirm your spot.
As more information becomes available regarding hotel/motel accommodations and perhaps block-room rates I will post them here. All up-dates will be posted here.
Carole and I will be there, so until then.....

I am only about 3 hours straight south of Denver, IA. This is something I will seriously consider.

I'm pretty sure the wife and I are in. We normally have our Christmas with the kids on the second or third week in January but I'm sure we can move things a bit. I asked what week worked best for them and nobody wanted to talk about Christmas in April I guess. Even tough we are getting more snow now then we did at Christmas this year.

Heck, if Ryan doesn't mind and we have time I would love to do a blue gill demo. All my air brushing stuff packs easy. It's gonna be a great time!!! Remember apple fritters!

In addition to putting faces to names I think a tour of the plant would be super cool.

Most definitely in.  It looks like TPO (The Patient One) is in as well.  She's the one who does all our airbrushing.  If enough ladies join us, we can ship them off to the nearest Bingo hall while us Neanderthal's hit downtown Denver to enjoy it's epic nightlife.  Denver's police force consists of a sheriff, a deputy and a part-time receptionist, but they'll probably bring in reinforcements this year.

Can't wait.

Downtown Denver is definitely a step back in time. Its sort of a cross between Gunsmoke and The Andy Griffin show. Imagine Mo as Opie and Denny as Festus, except he limps with both legs and if his six shooter didn't hamper his downward slump something else would be dragging on the gravel.

This is a good time for sure.

Sorry guys. Yesterday I finalized a date to go to Africa. This is a once in a life time trip and 01/11/17 to 02/02/17 are the dates that worked. My wife being an RN and getting off during the summer for three weeks was almost imposable. We had to pick dates that would work with her job and not being during the rainy season there. So is what it is. Maybe next time the year after.

No I don't hunt. Nothing against it just not what I do. When I use to hunt I had one main rule. To never hunt anything that hunts back. In Africa there are to many animals that would break my rule.

Like Gary said, look out for the lions. They are cats ya know and like to play with things that dangle so be sure you keep your goodies cinched so they're not swinging should you have to do a sprint and give Leo a good target. And of course we'll expect a photo documentary of thorn rash and any scars resulting from close encounters. Not interested in animal pictures since Nove and National Geographic keep us in the loop real well....just injuries. lol Sounds like a very good trip Lamar and I wish the two of you the best.

We are starting to get close to the date now and as Kyle has mentioned, those wanting blocked room rates should make reservations if they have not done so.

Right now I have been asked to get a show of hands of those who are committed to the get together. Just respond here.

Still unsure here; with the move and the fact the house hasn't sold yet money is tight. If the weather is nice and we can afford it, we'll be there. But we won't know til last minute.

Sometimes life gets in the way.  Put up with me as I explain what I'm talking about.

I turned 70 last year and things seemed to go downhill.  In June, I unexpectently passed out at home which resulted in a trip to the ER and a four day hospital stay.  They poked and probed, but couldn't find anything wrong.  I was discharged, but had to wear a heart monitor for 30 days.  They also took me off one of my heart meds.

A couple weeks later I went in for a treadmill test.  A few minutes into the test the RN administering the test said something was abnormally wrong, ripped the graph paper off the machine, and literally ran from the room in search of a doctor. I sent another several hours at the hospital but, again, they could find nothing wrong. They took me off another of my heart meds.

Over the next several months, I had three more trips to the ER, two by ambulance.  Same results. Bottom line... I had been in the hospital four times. They had taken me off three of the heart medications I had been taking and they had reduced the fourth medication by 50%. I was feeling great without any additional episodes. I had lost another 15 pounds or so (168 now) and felt terrific.  Yahoo!

The Yahoo was short lived.  Last Friday morning I had just gotten out of the shower and was shaving.   The next thing I remember I was walking into the bedroom holding the back of my head. I told TPO, "I think I fell".  She looked at the blood stained pillow and lickedly-split, we're one the way back to the ER.  Three staples, two cat scans, IV, took what seemed to be a gallon of blood, peeing into a plastic thing while lying down, etc, etc, etc.  "Everything looks fine, but we are going to put you on another 30 day heart monitor."

A couple other things of note.  I"ve recently had some skin cancers removed, two of which had to be cut out and biopsied.  All is well, but I have to do a skin rinse on my head, face, hands and arms.  TPO says the rinse is like a liquid chemo.  It peels a couple layers of skin off.  It makes you look like someone auditioning for the Living Dead.  It takes about a month and I start this week.  My biggest fear is that I'll be looking like Tom for a while.

Lastly, I was recently diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes.  (I've  have the surgery on both eyes and everything went fine.  I should be re-examined for glasses sometime next week.).  Of more concern was that during my initial examination for the cataracts I was told I have the very beginning's of macular degeneration in both eyes. I was told that there was no cure for macular degeneration and that the end result is blindness.  I was  also told that the progression of the disease was "extremely" slow. When asked what "extremely" meant I got a typical lawyer answer..."It depends".

So, for the above stated reasons, I will not be able to attend this year's "get together". I am in hopes, however, that all of you have a wonderful time at the event.  For you first-timers, you will experience what an incredible company Do-It is and how much they appreciate your participation in the forum.  You, individually and corporately, make a huge contribution to the continued success of the company.  To you old timers, I have it on pretty good authority that the "sticky fingers" issue that has been overlooked in the past will not be overlooked again. In fact, they will have armed plainclothes mercenaries walking the isles.  Forewarned is forearmed.

Have a great time.

Its been a real saga with Denny. I'm sure happy that Carole  and I got to hang out with Rosemary and Denny while he was less at issue with things, but I'm confident we can get him fixed up and on the mend. He's tough.

I will miss the two of them at the get together. If you haven't met Denny in person you have truly come up short on life's finer people.

Hmmm... Grampa told me something else starting with "m" leads to blindness.   :-X

As much as I want to go, I won't be able to make it either due to Sgt Major Wife and my upcoming big move down south.  Maybe next year, or who knows maybe we will have to have another "warm weather" get together down in the bayou.

Denny- I love ya, brother!   Thank you for sharing with us so those of us who pray know how to be praying for you and TPO, and those who don't can stay caught up with you!

Denny I love ya brother. It's the sucky part of getting older. We just fall apart and if we're lucky ( or not ) all the people we love go before us. I'm not much into praying but I do talk to the above and I'll put a word in for ya. In the end I'm going to meet you someday. I know that because it's what we do. It's a fisherman's code. Take time and heal. I'll be thinking of ya.

Denny,
I had a bout with passing out about 6 years back. I passed out about 3 times in a year and half for no reason. The last time was in the bathroom and I hit my forehead on the towel cabinet. Blood all over, cut me right between the eyes. My wife made me go to the ER. Same treatment as you got, heart monitor and the whole works. No results. They came to the conclusion that it was a combination of dehydration, sleep deprivation, and stress. All caused by caffeine overdose. I guess 2 pots of coffee, 3 to 4 Pepsis, and 18 hours a day at the gun shop were just too much for the blood sugar to keep its natural balance. I took their advise, cut back to 3 to 4 cups of coffee, 1 Pepsi, and lots of water. Started getting more sleep and working less hours. I haven't had another spell since. I have since sold the gun shop and started working a normal work week for another company. It's been 5 to 6 years and I haven't had a single fainting episode. Sounds similar to your experience except I have never been on any meds. I am also 13 years younger.
May God be with you, and get well soon.

Denny Sorry to hear that you have been having on going health issues. I was looking forward seeing you and the others from the first get together plus any new ones. Sure hope they get a handle on what is going on so you can get back to normal. Will pray that the powers that be help in a speedy improvement.
