pearl-x pigments
« on: 10/07/17 07:08 UTC »
Many here know that I am a big fan of using the pearl-x dry pigments for brushing some of my soft plastic baits. Probably as many wonder just where in the heck these pearl pigments can be gotten and in fact they can be a tough product to get hold of. I found a web site store that offers the pearl x goodies by the single 3 gm jar so a person can get specific colors without having to buy a set of colors, something pearl-x [Jacquard] is good at.

https://www.artmaterialsonline.com/pigments/pearl-ex-pigments/

This link is to a Twin Cities business that offers the pearl-x.  I spent about two hours nosing thru the different sections last night and have to say that this business has its act together when it comes to offering variety, not only with the pearls, but in the air brush/paint areas and many other venues that can get pulled right into tackle crafting. If you enjoy stepping a bit outside of the norm when making your plastic baits or perhaps airbrushing some custom bait bodies, this may be a fun place to check out. I see a ton of potential here.

By the way, these pearl pigments aren't just great for brushing on soft plastic. They are fully compatible with the plastic and its cooking temperature range and they mix right in raw plastic. They are potent and they are a colored product so some care has to be given to how much you use if you want to get a simple "hi lite" affect but they also can be added a little stronger to make some really out of sight pearl color plastics. These are not the simple colors of pearl powder and hi lite powder sold in the Do-It store or other plastic related websites, but they are simple to use and can really expand how your plastic colors can be created.

Awesome Tom. I use a lot of pearl ex also.  I will add that the interference colors of pearl ex are pretty close if not exact matches  to the hi -lite powders.  I'm a fan of the duel colors as well. They make some interesting colors of baits I'm not sure how to make other than use the pearl ex.  Thanks for the link Tom.

I know that you and Muskygary use the pearl-x. Good stuff, but it can be a hard to find product in single colors....at least it is up here.

I should add here too that the pearl-x pigments can be added in small amounts to clear top coat or clear base createx airbrush paint to create colors like you cannot believe. This is especially true if using the two-color pigments. As an example, mix up a bronze/purple pigment in the top coat and multi coat it instead of using a brown or a purple paint. The bronze/purple will color shift as the lure moves and by adding multiple thin coats and feathering the spray over other painted areas lightly a very real looking finish can be had and absolutely nothing like one would find in or on store baits. I have bait bodies on order but I have played with this technique on flat surfaces just to get accustomed to the air brush and paint consistency/air pressure. I'm working on a scale frame this weekend and that will come in handy when those bodies arrive.

All good info Tom. I have also added it in clear powder paint and got some cool effect too.

What are you using to make the pearls stick to the outside of the soft plastic when brushing them on? Do you have some sort of clear binder that makes them stick? If so what is it? Those are some really nice colors on the website you posted a link to. They have some colors I’d like to try out. You have me curious on this brushing method. We have mixed some automotive paint pearls in our plastics with mixed outcomes.

Panel truck the powder will stick with nothing to help but you must clear dip in plastic to keep it there.

Yep! Just like when you put eyes on a plastic bait. In fact, you can do both at once. Stick the eyes on, put pearl ex down the back and dip in hot clear plastic.

Yep just brush on where you want it and when you get that and eyes if you want make up a cup of clear hot plastic. Dip the bait in enough to cover what needs sealed in and pull out immediately. Let the Excess plastic drip off and I like to gently put mine in a bowl of water to cool fast. Don't drop in water or you will get flat spots.

And of course I just found the Do-It YouTube channel showing this exact subject. Wish I would have found it sooner instead of the other videos I had watched. Aw well you guys get to keep the credit on this subject
