Paasche VL air brush
« on: 05/26/19 19:31 UTC »
I found this one at a church rummage sale on bag day and paid $2.00 for the bag. The box appeared to be complete so I tossed it in the bag. I tried painting with it way back when and figured it was all gunked up and set the affair aside. Last fall I contacted the company about a re-build and got a decent estimate but just never got around to sending it of for the estimate. I was sorting thru a closet and came across the box again and decided to take the critter apart to see why I couldn't get paint flow and found it as expected, a mess with caked and dried paint. Conventional air brush cleaner wouldn't even touch the clogs so I put the parts in lacquer thinner for a day. I spent an hour this afternoon running fine wires and wiping out channels and tunnels and blowing out airways. Ifound a problem with the trigger mechanism where the trigger and paint metering needle were slipping and fixed that. After re-assembling the air brush I snapped the cup on and filled it with water and gave it a try. Bingo.

Tomorrow my plan is to work with some paint in this animal just to see how well is works. I already found out that it takes a very low pressure air flow to work with water....like 8 pounds of pressure Paint will of course be a different story but I have the time now that hurricane weather is supposed to be back about 4am and lasting for three days. Lots of rain coming I guess....up to three inches again tomorrow. So I may as well hide in the shop and make things work with this air brush. Anyone else use a Paasche? If so, how do you like it?

It's a workhorse of a brush great for blowing a lot of paint for coverage needle tip combo's are a little on the big side so super fine work should be left to another brush but the VL will put down some paint quickly I used one for years for base coat duties and was perfect

Thanks for the response. When I sprayed using water I was thinking that this airbrush would be a paint user....very broad spray pattern. There's a small thumb wheel on the top just ahead of the trigger. I checked the manual and found no mention of what it is for. Any idea G2L? I may have to go to an on-line parts reference to figure it out but thought maybe you have more experience with it.

Sure that's the line adjustment screw it adjusts paint flow to a pre-set flow its really a personal setting for repetitive work I rarely messed with it as it was kinda like making the brush single action meaning just pushing the trigger down produced air and paint

OK. Rt/Lft is there a direction that keeps the gun variable?

It's been awhile I no longer have it but I think if I remember correctly clockwise will make it like a single action that is if you press down on the trigger no need to pull back it will spray paint immediately least that's what remember I moved on to double action and smaller needle/nozzles for more control and detail work, my only siphon fed brush holds the duty of laying down base coats and heavy single color use it actually puts spray cans to shame I will pull my Talon siphon brush out where otherwise might pick up a spray can my Talon has a fan tip that puts spray cans to shame

Nothing like working with paint to figure things out so that's what I've been doing. I got it dialed now. I found a site that I can order other needles and heads to be able to blow finer coverage....I'll be getting a couple other sizes. The head/needle in the gun does a nice job if I don't lean on the paint delivery too much, but you're right....it does cover fast if I need it to. I see this as a real bonus for larger baits and have some plans for using it already. I tried a couple of hard to spray colors of createx.....the white, pearl white and transparent black are real viscous colors, even thinned, and my badger doesn't like them so well with the fine head I have in it. Increasing the air pressure a bit and they blow very well in this Paasche so it will get used. I'm sure glad I took the time while the weather sucks to work on it and get it smoothed over. Thanks for your input gone2long. I appreciate it!
