I ran out to the local lake this morning thinking the fishing might not be too bad ahead of a weather system due to hit tonight and I guess I called it right. The crappies were starting to show up off the old dock I like to hit early on and I took 5 for dinner tonight but caught several others. My first cast came back with a crappie. Cast number 4 brought this critter in.

The smallie would not hold still or straighten out for the picture but taped 18" and a hair. A 14" version of the same also came dockside. All of the crappies I caught were of the 11" to 11-1/2" variety but I lost one right at the dock that would have gone a foot easily.
The air temp when I started fishing was at 49 degrees and the water at the surface was 44 degrees. We're supposed to be knocking on 70 degrees here today ahead of a weather maker that's supposed to bring rain tomorrow and rain/snow on Weds so my buddy and I are heading to the Mississippi tomorrow to check out our spring spot. If its open we'll stay and fish. If its still locked in ice or the fishing sucks we'll go back to the other lake and dock because we know the fish are there now. We catch consistently bigger crappies on the river, but the lake has some brutes in it too however its just a hair early to start seeing them there.
Man it feels good to be fishing again.
