The New Hybrid Jig Mold
« on: 08/17/22 12:57 UTC »
I have the mold and really like the look of it. I poured some of the jigs and first impressions, I like the jig, but for me the barbs are too long, or at least longer than I like them. That's a minor thing as I can easily trim them smaller.

I need to get them painted & fish them.

Hmmm... I have not got the mold yet, but the barbs would be the one thing that would convince me to get it.  Years ago one of Do-it's ball head jigs had a single barb of similar size and shape, and of all my "plain" jig molds, these are still my favorite because of that barb.

Well, I do very much like the style.  Some others who had gotten it said it was difficult to pour, particularly the 3/8 cavity. They had problems getting complete pours. I'm not having a lot of problems, but I do get the mold very hot. I will likely add a piece of angle to support the hook for that 3/8 cavity, as it tends to want to fall out easily. I've got other molds that folks complain about and it's just been a learning curve to get complete pours with them too, so I was ready to deal with this new mold.

I have no issue with the double lead barb, but with them being long, they tear up some of the plastics that I use. I've got a lot of older Do It molds and other brands and have modified some of my molds to make the barbs hold better, by filing with a small triangular shaped file, and then had to trim them too as it made them too long. I guess it really would depend on the plastics used. I have some bigger plastics that I plan to try with the heavier heads, and will see how that works with the barbs as they come out of the mold. If I have the same tearing problems, I'll again just trim the barb down. I would rather have more barb than less, and trim them to fit the plastic baits I may be using.  That's easy to do.

Drake, what type of plastic bait would you use on that jig, which looks great BTW?  I'm a fan of black jigs anyway!  ;D

I'll be using some different paddletail swimbaits and some of them have fairly narrow bodies, like the Reaction Innovation Skinny Dipper type. Those I have had tear up easily with long lead barbs on other jigs.

I think that this new Hybrid would also make a great underspin type of jig.  ::)

Thanks for the compliments on the Jig! Starting out I also had some issues getting the 3/8's cavity to pour fully. Obviously having your melter flowing at peak performance is the most important step to getting a full pour - but the real trick for me was matching the slight angle of the "funnel" in the sprue to get the lead to shoot straight down into the cavity. I've found that a 30 degree angle with the nose (hinge end) of the mold up makes a perfect pour every time! The angle of the sprue on this mold in particular is more exaggerated because we wanted to fit as many cavities in the mold as possible! I will say it does make me feel very spoiled when I go back to pouring a different mold like a football swing jig after pouring the Hybrid because it takes a lot less focus when pouring!

To answer your question about a trailer for this jig... I'd have to say a MM Moonlight Menace Grub!

I'm still undecided on the matte flay paint but those eyes are sinister coupled with the black, Drake. As for the mold and the head I'm getting pretty positive feedback. I had a couple minor filling issues but decided that they were more hook related since in either instance I was using a hook one size over the suggested size. Heating the hooks boogied the issues.

Thanks Drake!  Appreciate the reply and information!

Ctom, I'm pouring all the cavities with a 4/0, and using the recommended Victory hook model.

I really like the mold. I too had some initial issues with the 3/8 cavity. That being said, I wish we could see a 1/4 ounce version.
