I like the Lee Precision Melter and the ladle hand pour method. No worries about the spout clogging or dripping!

I just went back to what I had. A 10 pound bottom pour. This last one lasted 10 years or so. I'm not too keen on the ladle idea. To me it's just one more step that you're handling hot lead and one more chance something could go wrong.

Whatever works best for you Lamar. That 10 pound bottom pour is a nice unit.

I started out using a simple hot pot 4# unit as my lead vessel but used a ladle instead of pouring. I've tried the bottom pour units but didn't care for the nozzle thing underneath and currently have been using 20 pots with ladles to hand pour. I've done it for so long its second nature now. I have a six-ounce ladle for big stuff and a smaller one to handle most of what I do and can hand pour jigs down to 1/80 ounce without any problem at all, and the mold for them is a semi-custom designed for the bottom pour pots. I do around a 1000 1/80 each fall and will have maybe five or six mis-pours in all of that pouring.

I just make baits for myself so I pour far less. As I've gotten older I have developed a slight tremor in my hands and have noticed open pour molds are getting harder and I need to use a rest to steady the pouring. All part of aging I guess. To the plus side when we're low on butter the wife has me carry a jar of cream around and before you know it we're all stocked back up. Nothing better than home made butter.

Funnier than heck. When are you coming to visit? I'll stock up on heavy cream.

Funnier than heck. When are you coming to visit? I'll stock up on heavy cream.

I spent a little over a month in Minnesota this year. From the last week of July to the second week of September. Next summer my daughter is moving from St. Paul two and a half hours north west. So she'll be about an hour south of the boarder and has an airport near by. So when I take my Canadian trip with my friend I can stay at her house and only have a six hour drive from there. Part of the time I was there this year was in the boundary waters. My brothers daughter got married there. We stayed at the Gunflint Lodge. That's where my parents took me and my sister back 55 years ago to portage out. It's also where I fell in love with the north woods. My parents would be very proud of that little lady. I'm thinking next spring when we're up there I'll try to hook up with you two. We'll probably be there a week or so driving back and forth from St.Paul and up north. My brothers daughter still lives in St. Paul and he lives about an hour away in Wisconsin. So we'll see how it all plays out.

If you're set with a 10 lb. pot call Lee and look into the 1/2 price replacement program.  They'll tell you what you need to do and you'll either get your pot repaired or a brand new one at 1/2 the price of a new one.
