Is that color "new penny" or similar? I've used new penny in saltwater/brackish water, but not in freshwater.

However, I have found that many of the so called saltwater colors, can work great in freshwater sometimes

I just make mine with a ned head mold and a double keeper that is used in the swim bait heads. I don't think I even had to modify it any because it fits where the hook would normally be. I do have to bend the nose of the keeper a little on the smaller weights. I also use that weight in a Neko rig. Because of that double barb I don't loose many.

I'm looking for a more centered balance than weighting the head... ideally this rig will be a down-sized version of a muskie glide bait.

The bottom one is how I fish it by dipping the tail in black. You might be surprised how well it does.

How would you rate the effectiveness of the black tail as compared to chartreuse?

A lot of gold fish have black spots on them. There's a lot of bait in the water with black spots. Just a different look.

Speaking only in terms of bait color with a different tail color, just about all of my panfish baits get a chartreuse tail because it does make a difference. An orange tail might help with a bite once in a very long while. Blue tails get ignored. Never tried black but may now do so.

I don't know about bass but if a tail paddle gets nipped by a sunfish while crappie fishing, the bait is done. Junk. Most of the time even a sunfish will not hit the bait if the paddle is gone.

Tom, I agree with you with the exception of the thumperswim fry.  That little tail gets bitten off and I change up retrieves and twitch it as if it were a stinger (cuz at that point it is) and it works like a charm

Our crappies won't touch it without the paddle. Weird. A Fry bait with the pointed tail gets hammered. A paddletail without the paddle, no go.

I'm another that had never heard of it so I watched the video and seeing on how it was falling actually reminds me of the Flying Lure action.

I have been hearing about this technique for awhile and never gave it much thought. I finally got around to testing it out on the crappie and perch over the weekend. I rigged up a 3” Jacob’s Mold silver fish minnow with a #2 hook. A slow day and no big perch were located, but I did land 4 of 6 perch on that rig. A very subtle bite. I didn’t know I had a fish on until I lifted the bait and felt resistance. The nail weights I picked up were 3/16oz. After breaking off the bulb end for a slower fall the fish ate it. I will adding this technique to my future trips.

Since I had posted here last on this topic, I've bought two molds for pouring the jigs in various weights. I still have not fished them, but now have some poured to try out.

The waters been muddy here lately, and we just got more rain, so maybe I'll give them a try next week.

I tossed a chatterbait style jig the other day a little while, but didn't even get a hit. There had been some tournaments & pre-fishing going on, so many boats, and the waters was stirred up a bit, even though it had been clearing some.

I didn't see anyone else catching anything either.
