X2 colorant question.
« on: 08/22/13 15:03 UTC »
I just go my first bottle of x2 and I have a question.  Will this stuff settle like normal colorant after time?  It seems too thick to drop a couple nuts in and shake it up.  Have you guys has an issue with it settling and what have you done to remix it?

   Thanks

All liquids settle after enough time. I put one stainless steel (make sure is stainless steel!) nut in each bottle and shake frequently until the nut is hitting the top and bottom of the bottle (by sound or feel). I shake it up every time I use a color.

When I haven't used a color for a long time I'll  shake for a long time or use the probe from my thermometer to get it stirred up enough for the nut to work.

I don't have any idea how many colors of X2I have, but some I've had since before Do It was ever mentioned at CCM. They are thick and yes they will settle but it takes a long time for them to settle much. I put the nuts in every color I get, X2 or otherwise and I take time every couple weeks to get them all out and give them a rattle. If you don't want to play with the stainless stuff and have a little time on your hands should a color hard pack, you can scrape it around in the bottle using a long screwdriver. If it hard packs, pour the liquid into another bottle so you minimize a mess, add about 1/2" of softener, worm oil, or stabilizer to the colorant bottle and scratch away with the screwdriver bit until you have as much of the packed stuff mixed into whatever you've added as you can without poking a hole in the bottom. Then add your stainless nuts and pour the colorant back in the original bottle and shake away to blend everything back to a useable state.

As I have used the thicker colors and the levels in those bottles goes down I have added some stabilizer and/or softener to the contents to help loosen the remainder up. I agree that the stuff is thicker than thick, but I also feel that taking time to keep these product agitated is important especially if you are going to follow color recipes and hope to stay constant.

Yes you will have trouble with it if it is left to sit

Thanks guys.  I'll throw a couple nuts in there.  It just seems like it's so thick it would take a lot of force to get the nuts moving enough to break it up.  I have found with regular liquid colorants that 15 - 20 seconds in the microwave (loosen the cap first) makes them mix back up much easier.

I think you will find that the fluorescent colors are much more prone to settling than most darker colors, but the X2 colorants will not settle to near the degree of other colorants overall.

Jerry -

How thick is 'too thick' - I have a couple of bottles that will literally float the nuts I've put in them - there is no way to get a 'drop'.

Sim,

I have a couple of colors that are as thick as ketchup, maybe as thick as mayonnaise.

I would say that I have some that are thick also but since its been 97+ for almost 2 weeks straight everything is on the thinner side right now.
