playin, playin, playin

For a couple years I was hoping for a crappie jig to come along that would offer better hooking as well as a more forward tie-on point to make swimming baits look more like they are swimming instead of hopping like the 90 degree bend hooks are stuck with. Lots of things seemed to get in the way until recently when I was digging thru my box of old molds that don't see much use anymore. The one that caught my eye has 4 each of 1/32 and 1/16 cavities, collar-less. I thought what the heck, I can do something with the right hooks.

That got me paging thru Do-It's catalog and I found the wacky hook, a black nickel hook with a way forward eye. The hook is also a wide gap style of hook and it just so happened to come in size 6 which is what I wanted to work with. I ordered a few of them just to see what the outcome would be. I had the house to myself this afternoon and sat down with the old mold and new hooks and went to work in the 1/32 cavities. The picture shows the results and right now I could not be happier.

The top jig has the conventional 90 degree leg, the others have the wacky hook. Best seen on the blue head to the left, the eye is well forward of what the traditional jig has and on when used with swimming type baits or those cast and retrieved without any float the action is uncanny. I know this because as soon as I took this picture I grabbed a rod and waded thru 30 some inches of snow to make a bunch of casts, first using the 90 degree jig, then the newly developed one. No fish but I sure was able to fall in love with this heads" action using the small fry [1.75"] shown.

Did you have to modify the mold?

Oh yes. Since the mold was an old one I simply laid the hooks in the cavities so that the eyes were in the eye sockets of the mold, carefully closed it up and rapped the top half of the mold a half dozen times. I had the bottom half of the mold on a vise's flat side....no give, instant transformation.

I have some touch-up to do to get things near perfect but really the mold throws these new jigs nicely as it sits.

This isn't the first time I have seen hooks like this spun into a crappie sized jig. Its the first time I have seen a ballhead jig with these hooks.

I never thought about using a fry bait on the wacky head jig; but I think the swim fry or the super fry would work good on that jig. I know your talking about crappie; but I'm thinking about walleye and smallmouth! Thanks for another idea.

Great jigs musky. After seeing the minnow head jig at Do-It. Iwas wondering what other molds the wacky hook might work in. The wide gap in a small weight is a real plus in a lot way's.

Ctom, I liked what you did with the whacky jig hook. Did you have to use a dremel or file on the cavity after you whacked it a half dozen times, or did it make enough dentation you  was  able to use the hook after hitting the mold?

brandx....Nope.  The aluminum in the jig molds is fairly soft, much more-so than the extruded aluminum used in the cut plastic molds. I have done conversions on other Do-It jig molds and used JB Weld, the high heat formula, to clean up areas that didn't suit me. Only in one instance of doing the hammer-tap mod have I had to use a very fine flat file to slide over the mated surfaces of the mold to reduce flash and even I used hardly any pressure at all, I just let the file slide over the flash I created a couple times and that was it.

That looks incredible, I bet the hook ups improve with the wacky hook, that is out of the box thinking for sure, I have to get that mold.

Do-It has a "wacky head mold that uses this hook, but it doesn't do 1/32 heads. And I seldom fish over 1/32 heads. So I had to cook up something. This was it. We haven't been above 0 until today and I was at our shop all day so I haven't had much more time to throw the heads again. Its supposed to warm up now and we work the shop again on Thursday so a rod and a few plastics for this head are going to be in the van when we get there to work. When I run the bank deposit I plan to toss this one a bunch to see how things look.
