Skirts

I've been wondering how skirts for swim jigs are made. I've seen skirt molds but are these used to make skirts for jigs or for tubes? If they are for jigs, do you just use hard plastic?

Sorry it may be a simple question and answer but I'm a little stumped lol

I'm a little confused by your question (which is pretty easy to do). I use spinnerbait skirts on the jig and a plastic trailer.

how are the skirts made? Or do you just have to buy them to put on the jigs

I buy the skirts in bulk and then tie them on. I don't think you can make them yourself. At least I don't know of anyone that does. Here's one place you can buy about any color or style you want http://fishingskirts.com

Just about all silicone skirt material is made overseas, the primary manufacturer is GLC. They produce 90% of the material used by all major companies and suppliers.

I talked to the owner of GLC Fishing, Mr. Daryl Green, several times about some products they make and he told me that there is only 2 or 3 manufacturers of silicone skirt material including his company. They are made with some type of extrusion process and then the colors and patterns are dyed onto the silicone. They make is in what we normally buy which is the tabs, but there is another way which is called skip-cut in which you purchase the material in a roll. The skip-cut material is 42 strands wide with a solid tab every 5.25" so you can cut off a full 42 strand skirt from a roll instead of putting tabs together. I believe Barlows Tackle sells material in skip-cut rolls.

They are easy to assemble J. I buy all my skirt making stuff at Barlow's tackle and fishingskirts.com. ------Tim.

For me it's hard to look on the computer and see the colors I like. There's just so many of them. So a few years ago I took the three hour drive to Jann's and just took my time and found the colors and components I like. It was worth the trip. Now I have it all wrote down so when I order I get what I want. Even when it come to blades and hooks. There are so many. So I found it easier to make the drive and see it in your hand. Here's their web page  http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/skirt-making-material/

Yawl True Bass Guys wouldn't pull my stunt, but I've been moving in a different direction.  I've been looking into the old style skirts, like on Humdingers, the wide strand skinny skirts.  I've had enough trouble trying to find colors and quantity, so I decided to just use some hand-poured Sparkle Beetles on a lot of my spinnerbaits (not speaking of Jigs, that the Bass Guys use).  That thick plastic bait never gets fouled around the hook and I can make them in endless colors.  At least THAT has been simplified.
