Nothing to show for it....

This morning I hit up the lake from a dock and tried the crappies out. The only open water I had was full of current and ice still sits on the portion of lake where the first crappies of the year like to hang out. Supposed to hit 60 tomorrow and with the water running good now my pet spot should be open on Tuesday so I'll make a return to it then.

A friend accompanied me today and between us we went thru about 20 bait changes, but still ended up with nothing to show for our efforts. Well, I did get coon eyes from the sun.

Carole and I just came in from a nice walk....outside. We did about three miles. Half of the walk was along river, creek or lake shore in town and it sure is satisfying to see water running over ice now. I expect tomorrow the river behind us will be full of ice as the water continues to climb and the main flow is carving a nice path thru the lake's white cover.

We saw our first osprey of the season on todays walk.

I did yard work all day....and was REALLY happy to do it! 48 degrees never felt so good!

Fzished eight hours with not much sucess yesterday. Storms rolled through just before daybreak dumping two inches of rain. then the wind picked up and blew 15 -25 all day. Caught a bunch of small fish but nothing of any size. This week is going to be in the high seventies every day. Things should change in a hurry.

  There's so much ice on the boat ramp that I would be afraid to try and back my boat in. Last night got maybe three more inches of snow. Ran the snow blower this morning and went to the gym. At this pace I'm never going to get to fish but I'll be in great shape.

I made the run out to the same lake again this morning with the thermometer reading 48 degrees. The recent melt and rain/snow event had the lake up and down and up a bit again before it settled at today's normal reading so I thought things might be in my favor...fish-wise that is. Nada.

The water was back to normal but there's still plenty of ice in bays nearby keeping the water temps down and some residual current hauling lots of grass and wood just added to the mess. Let me not forget the wind....Canada and Michigan were sucking today. Hard.

I checked water temps in five spots and had 36, 37 and 38 degrees scattered thru the tested locations. It needs a couple more degrees at the top end to get fish going. Ice still covers the boat landing so I stayed on a dock today. What with this wind I think if the ice in front of the landing had a sail stuck in the middle of it the mass would be gone in a day

But I did get to try some terrific baits and colors today, so all was not lost. I'll be casting to the river tomorrow for a few minutes and maybe there I can find a dinner. It was sweet feeling the breeze and not freezing this morning. Another week and the boat will be going.
