I have an old red handled hound that we sort of traced back to the original garage Do-It in Waterloo.
I had four (only one now) of the really old ones with stained walnut (or mahogany) handles; they were not only from the Waterloo locale, but also before the dates stamps, which puts them 1970-ish and earlier... (I'm betting the painted handles came into play to reduce costs from the quality of wood needed for the stained wood grain handles.)
