Mayday Mayfly

This is not a very exciting color but I think you could shoot this bait in any color and it would catch fish.  When the bass fishing is slow and I just want some action these get the nod. They are also the go-to when I'm out with the kids, the gills and sunnies go crazy for them.

Nice DF. What did you do for the white ? Put one drop of white in each mold ?

The white dots are Spike-It soft plastic lure paint. https://www.ispikeit.com/Store/p-19-worm-chunk-paint.aspx
This stuff is great for putting dots or stripes on otherwise boring solid color baits.

2XL, this mold shoots great, sometimes the thin tails don't fill all the way if your plastic or you mold is to cold but a little heat fixes that.

That "spot" concept on pannie baits is a good one. Years and years ago I had some plastic baits that had a single large drop of color on another color, a different body and no legs with a split tail, that was a dynamite bluegill bait. Purple with a white spot like this comes to mind as being a really hot color.

Good stuff DF.

I had my Mayfly mold out the other day to whip up some more natural colors that got tapped big time last fall.

I remember painted dots on some of the plastic worms in the early 70s. White or yellow dots on black baits, white or bright yellow on purple baits and red dots on white baits. I remember saving my allowance to buy one of those purple baits then taking it to the dam and losing it to a snag a few casts later. It was the end of the world back then. LOL

Remember the old pre rigged worms from Plow Jockey and the Kelly's Pier-Boy Special back then ? They all had dots on them.

I still use those pre-rigged worms once in a while, something about the slow looping acting of those things gets the bass every time. My grandparents have caught hundreds of fish on the purple and white versions. I thought about curing some Freedom Fries with a bend in them to get a similar action.

I like to put them under a float on a small jig head or nose hook them on a light weight drop shot setup.

I dip mine on a plain, un-painted 1/32 head. #6 hook and shallow hooking depth along the back. Both crappies and sunfish have done me good rigged this way.

I think I was 10 or 11 at the time (that was 40+ years ago) and I can't remember the names of those worms. All I knew is they were the coolest thing I had ever seen and I just HAD to get my hands on one. LOL We didn't have much money back then and it was a big deal to be able to buy a "lure" like that.  I was totally crushed when I lost it to a snag just minutes after I bought it because that was the only "lure" I owned.  LOL
