Salt in sticks
« on: 10/17/11 08:21 UTC »
Curious how much salt y'all use in stickbaits.

I dont think I am using enough. But with handpouring, I cant use anymore or it gets too thick and wont pour.

Can I use more salt if I inject?

Thanks.....Bill

I use about a 25% salt:plastic ratio.  So, 1 cup of plastic, 1/4 cup salt.  I have personally found if you make smaller batches, you can keep the salt suspended a little easier.  What method are you using to heat your plastic and do you have a method of keeping it warm?

I currently use 1 tablespoon per 4 oz. As I said, I handpour and cant really go any more than that or its too thick.

I microwave. pour, Cool 5-10 mins, add sprues, and reheat. Sometime on third heat I add a touch of virgin plastic.

Thanks.....Bill

Ya, was using pickling salt and ordered some fine from Bears.

If I go to injecting, can I add more and still shoot well?

Thanks....Bill

I use a touch over one ounce of salt in 4oz. I also hand pour and have no problems. Get plastic hot. The salt keeps the boiling point up so you can get it a bit hotter with out burning. Then stir, stir, stir. I stir between each of the first four sticks and between every two after that.

Unless you molds are getting really hot, I think you could reduce your cool time. I only have one stick mold at this time, I pour in my garage, so in the summer it's hot. It has made my sticks cool as long as 8 minutes.
