Best Jig Head??
« on: 10/17/11 11:14 UTC »
I love fishing my own plastic baits...and I am thrilled that I can mold by own Chub Grub (Hula bait)...but I absolutely HATE the jigs I've been using and their ability (or complete lack there of) to keep the bait on the jig correctly!!!

I have lately taken to buying high quality Bass Jigs (with skirts) that have a good trailer connection ..double collars and a small wire...and cutting off the skirt. That seems to work ok...but I still have issues with the weight of the plastic...throwing itself off the head of the jig.

This was especially troublesome this weekend while we fished wind gusts to 40mph! You really had to wail the thing!!! I ended up going Texas rig...which helped a bit, especially when i use skip gap hooks for better support.

If I cast "carefully" it is less than a problem of course...

I've tried "crazy glue" to glue the bait to the collars and that only works "ok"...plus the glue turns white in the water and eventually fails. Does anyone have recommendations on a glue that works?

So...do you have a favorite jig head....and where do you buy it?

(Jason: Any plans on selling jigs that work well with your baits? I would really like to find some 3/8oz and 1/4oz quality Arky style jig heads!!!)

I have the same issue you described.  Another huge issue is the cost of some heads.  It's high on my priority list, it's just a long list...   :-\

Glue it on in the short term.  ( Pro's Soft Bait Glue ) From Lure Craft; or the Pro's Soft Bait Glue company ( he has a website ).
He is a nice guy; so are the Lure Craft people.  Both are fast.  Be very carefull or you will glue the skirt tails together.  Do not apply directly from the bottle to the bait; as it has very strong capillary action. Use a large needle and "transfer" a drop at a time to the bonding joint.   Jigheads are an obsession for me ( as Jason will attest   :D ).  You might want to look at Do-It's Screw-Loc Worm Nose Mold.
I pour my own heads.  Many are from modified Do-it molds; and a couple of custom molds.

I ordered a two pack of that  Pro's Soft Bait Glue. I have read some very good reviews.

I also got my Bass Pro Shops order (finally) with the Chompers Brush Jigs and I suspect that between that really good looking screw body and the adhesive....I might be a happy fisherman!

I will do some extensive testing!

My buddy makes mine and he replaces the weedguard with a coil lock (spring). They make spider grubs last twice as long and they work great for keeping the bait off the bottom. If you know someone who makes jigs I think they could do this with about any bass jig(football, round, arkie, etc.) I hope this makes sense. I will try to post a pic tomorrow. Hope this helps

I use that jig with the Mad Dad 3xl and it works really well for that bait. I'm going to try it this weekend when I get my new glue and see how it improves.

I cast my own JigHeads, and my favorite is a non-weedless, "standard" head.  A Do-It "Darter" head.  I mostly cast the 1/8 oz., but also have the same style mold for the 1/4 and 3/8 oz.  They have a NASTY Barb Collar...I actually "nip" the collar down to about half (or slightly less) of it's original length because the barb is so long it sticks THROUGH the plastic on alot of bodies and tears up the plastic pretty bad, worse on removal.  The mold takes the "standard" 570/575 JigHooks...I use mostly Matzuo Sickle Black http://www.barlowstackle.com/Matzuo-9014-Jig-Hooks--P369.aspx but I have a few hundred Mustad Long Shank, Medium Wire hooks in 2/0 and 3/0.  The 1/16 oz. Darter takes the 2/0 Mustad (barely) and the 1/8 oz. takes the 3/0 Mustad (barely)... http://www.barlowstackle.com/Mustad-32831BLN-Jig-Hooks-P406.aspx ...The 1/8 oz. Darter takes the 3/0 Matzuo Sickle quite well, but I've modified my molds to take bigger hooks.  Again, these are standard, non-weedless, "light wire" hooks.
I'll see about gettin' some pics up...
