variation, variation, oh how I love thee...
« on: 10/12/11 10:44 UTC »
I am checking out these fine colors, and I thought of something interesting.  When I first got all my color, in order to regulate and keep all yorkers equal, I used a small nail to puncture the end of all the caps.  When I look through my notebook so far, if I were to average all 35 colors I have tested, in order to get a solid (non-transluscent) color, it goes like this:

4 oz plastic
40-50 drops of color

I am noticing on the cookbook here most of you seem to be using FAR less drops for a solid color.  This got me thinking about whether you are all cutting the top section of your yorker caps off vs. puncturing with a nail like I do?  Obviously the flow would be much more hence my million-droplet approach above vs. your 5 or 10 or so..  I did read somewhere an idea of using a shot glass or similar and a digital scale to weigh the color vs. drops....I know there are so many variations, hence my poem title above.  :D

I am curious to hear your thoughts.....

I can't speak on behalf of everyone, but they make opaque and translucent colors. If you can find opaque colors you'll minimize on the amount your using to in each mixture. Happy Coloring!

Thanks Dave.  I think I mis-spoke slightly.  What I mean is I am wondering if since my openings in my yorkers are so tiny if the amount of color I am using is the same with my 40 or 50 drops vs everyone else's 5 or 10 for example..
If I only used 10 drops of any color the bait will look more of a smoke color vs. a solid color.

So I guess another way to ask the question is What do the rest of you do to your yorker caps?  Do any of you use a nail like me, or do you cut off just the very top portion, or??

I realized after I tested all this color and painstakenly :) wrote down each one, that maybe I need to use a larger opening on these.  (also had fun learning the difference between well-shaken color vs. shake for a while and 'looks good'') :D :D

personally I am the same way as you! I do not like "see-through" colors... I like more opaque

I cut off the top of the dropper... barely though! And still end up with about 50-60 drops (on average) per cup and then add glitter.

I should say though, I do not use salt. Salt will make your baits much more opaque but also make it take a few more drops of colorant to achieve the same color... if that makes sense at all LOL

I cut off the top...and put in 20 drops...so I must cut it off a lot lower than most!

Plus...I have a heck of a time counting 20 drops...let along 50!

But I like my baits more transparent....for the most part.

You can also get the oral syringes from CVS, Walgreen's, etc. (they give me mine by the handful for free), and measure out your colorant and/or scent in milliliters.

Every cap I get already has a thin hole in it. I have tried using a measuring spoon when a lot of paint is required, ex black purple

All good stuff!
I like your idea on using syringes, and although I could not get them free like your hook up, I think I'll ask my lovely wife who has an eBay biz to ask around her eBay buddies for some in bulk.  I did find a great source for ordering 4 and 8 oz bottles with un-poked :D yorker caps to use to funnel in from the huge bottles if anybody ever needs them- good prices.

I also have a short attention span so the counting kills me sometimes!  :)  But I guess it makes the end product have that much more of an appreciation factor.  LOL!

Thanks gang- I LOVE this forum and Jason's way of doing things.

I have some heavier guage sewing needles that I use as bodkins, for glue dispensing,  adjusting wire forms in lead molds, etc.  I use a larger sized needle to poke down through the top of the dispensing caps to open any caps that are closed and to get closer to a uniform "drop".  I never cut off the top of my dispensing caps.
